Moving right along here with the 2024 NFL Draft Profile series. Up next is Michigan running back Blake Corum. How should you feel about him as the draft inches closer? Let’s not waste any more time and get right into the mud.
Corum, a Virginia native, is certainly a player I’ve done a 180 on during the season. I’ve complained about him on more than one occasion. Even the Penn State game when they didn’t throw the ball in the entire second half. I just think there are things that can’t be ignored when it comes to Corum. You know, like the fact that 12 of his 45 career touchdowns went for more than five yards.
It was unfinished business for Michigan but that especially applies to their starting running back. Corum suffered a season-ending knee injury during the 2022 campaign. It’s safe to say he bounced back just fine. The Wolverines back notched 27 rushing touchdowns averaging 4.8 yards per carry on 258 attempts. He added 411 career receiving yards to the stat line too.
There are just some things that you have to give Corum credit for. He’s a true workhorse. I mean that in a way that goes beyond the carry numbers. He gets better as the game goes on. Tough back and he loves the game. That’s not hard to see. He’s got a bowling ball element to his game where the defense just gets tired of tackling him. High level of competitive stamina. Great contact balance. Doesn’t mess around and hits the hole. Pure North-South runner. Ripped out a really good number on the bench at the Combine too.
Often times it felt like he just couldn’t hit that home run. Can only accelerate to a certain point. The 4.53 is more than passable. It’s not even the fact that the speed is a problem. It’s one gear. Not a super creative runner and just doesn’t have that juice that his teammate Donovan Edwards does. However, I think we learned at the Combine that his foot quickness might have been more underrated than I said during the season.
Big difference between a short back and a small back. Corum is 5-foot-8 with a tick under 29 inch arms. The 205 for that size says a lot of the story. He tested much better at the Combine than I expected. At the end of the day, maybe there needs to be adjustment made for how bad this running back draft is. For as flawed as Corum is, how many guys are better than him in this class? You willing to bet your life on any of these guys turning out to be better? With his production and work habits?
I have Corum as a 5th rounder knowing that he probably won’t make it to me. If I take a running back any higher than the 4th round he better blow my eggplant emoji off when I watch him play. I can’t get there with Corum but if anyone has a chance to become the next Kyren Williams, I wouldn’t be surprised.
