Trey Benson 2024 NFL Draft Profile
Moving right along here at the running back position, we’re going to talk about who many view as the top back in the class, Trey Benson. Is the Florida State running back really that good? Let’s get down to business.
Benson, a former Oregon commit, was a four star prospect out of high school reigning from Mississippi. With the Ducks, there is almost no production to speak of. Benson tore his ACL, MCL, lateral meniscus, medial meniscus, and gracilis tendon (hamstring) back in 2020. That happened during a scout team practice and it basically took him two years to recover only playing in 14 snaps in 2021 before transferring to Florida State.
With the Seminoles, Benson averaged 6.1 YPC in 316 carries over the last two years. Add in 25 total touchdowns and 33 receptions for 371 receiving yards and we’re pretty much all caught up with his stat totals.
During the year I thought Benson was really inconsistent. Looked very average against LSU. Had a nice home run carry against Miami. Took over when they needed him most in the ACC Title Game.
For me, the biggest negative that stands out is his vision. Mentioned it during the Combine. During the games, there are times that he leaves yards on the table. Often times too indecisive and wasted movement when he could just turn up the field and go. Faster than quick but not slow short area. Just a bit of a hesitation. Not an ace in pass protection either.
What you like is the fact that he checks the box from the size, weight, speed element. He runs really upright but we’ve seen that style work before. From a playlistic standpoint, he reminds me a lot of Breece Hall when he came out of Iowa State. It’s a matter of if he’s going to be as good as Hall. Benson is on the taller side checking in at 6-foot, 216, and 4.39 speed. Wasn’t as good in the vertical notching a 33.5 but that confirms that he’s not an A+ in the quick game element.
I have Benson as a top six running back in the 2024 NFL Draft but I’m not foaming at the mouth to go get him. Especially not with the red flag medical past. Benson is toolsy and interesting to project but if he turns into an elite running back I’d be very surprised. Good player that should done just fine during the length of his rookie scale contract. I’d be willing to take Benson in the 5th round full well knowing he will likely be gone by that stage of the draft.
