Division 1 college football offers some things the NFL does not. Such things include over four times as many teams, raucous student sections, and, of course, seemingly endless amounts of uniform combinations. This is Vendetta’s debut of ranking the best college football uniforms of the weekend. This will be the first appearance for every school here today, but we will be keeping track of how many times the top schools appear week-by-week. These are in no particular order. So, who brought the heat this weekend?
Look good, play good, right? The 17th-ranked Chanticleers busted out a teal-on-teal combination that helped them absolutely wipe the floor with the UMass Minutemen 53-3. Coastal’s regular home uniforms consist of teal tops and black bottoms, black helmets, and black accessories. On Saturday, they swapped the black pants for teal to match their tops and unique field turf, as well as going with white helmets, facemasks, and accessories. To me, this was the best college football uniform of week 4.
Despite being 4-0, the Sooners have been rather disappointing in 2021, however, their uniforms Saturday night did not disappoint. While hosting West Virginia, Spencer Rattler and the Sooners rolled out in a different uniform then the classic crimson and white home set. This new set substituted white for cream and included thick piping on their tops. Oklahoma’s helmets also went cream, and the interlocking “OU” changed to crimson. Even while looking great, the Sooners only beat the Mountaineers by three points in a strangely low-scoring Big 12 matchup. As for West Virginia, should you trust their quarterback situation and buy SimBull stock in them? Find out here.
Arizona State debuted their new Adidas Reverso Retro uniforms against Colorado Saturday night. The Reverse Retro series was popularized by Adidas’s NHL collection, where every team used throwback designs with flipped primary and secondary colors. ASU’s home combination is normally maroon top, gold bottoms, and gold helmets with their pitchfork logo. This unique uniform had a gold top, maroon bottoms, and a gold helmet with a Sparky logo, which is arguably the best logo in the country. The Sun Devils rolled the Buffaloes 35-13.
North Carolina State pulled off the biggest upset of week 4 by defeating #9 Clemson 27-21 in double overtime. The uniforms they rolled out was also a major victory. The white helmets featured NC State’s Tuffy logo along with a red facemask that matched the red tops. Combining those with white pants and white accessories looked incredible once the lights kicked on in overtime.
Western Kentucky hosted a blackout against Indiana in week 4. Just look at those beauties. Black tops, black bottoms, and chrome helmets with chrome red facemasks. Of course, as a blackout game calls for, the Hilltoppers wore black accessories. Their socks were fun too, with striping that almost look like they belong on a baseball diamond. Unfortunately, Western Kentucky lost 33-31.
Oklahoma State’s football team has worn a ton of different uniform combinations over the recent years. Like their play, the set they put out against Kansas State on Saturday did not disappoint. The Cowboys went white-black-white from head to toe with a black Pistol Pete logo on the helmet and black facemasks. Also, take notice of the detailed piping on the shirts – it’s just flat out awesome.
Old Dominion lost an absolute heartbreaker to Buffalo in week 4 as they missed a game tying PAT with under a minute to go, causing them to fall short by one point, 35-34. However, they debuted a new uniform combination. Instead of their normal navy blue and silver home uniforms, the Monarchs busted out an all “Carol Hudson Blue” combination recognizing a former sports information director for the school. They also brought out white helmets with a white facemask. Like NC State, by the time it was late into the game, the lights made Old Dominion’s baby blue uniforms and white accessories shine.
ECU hosted Charleston Southern in what I’m deeming the “Bucco Bowl” on Saturday. The Pirates defeated the Buccaneers 31-28, and they did so in a great uniform set. Whenever purple is highlighted in a set, eyes will go right to it. ECU went with a purple top, yellow pants, and purple helmets. Their yellow facemasks made everything complete.
Which school do you think had the best college football uniforms from week 4?
