Ben Volin Admits To Using Fake Tip About Mac Jones

Boston Globe journalist Ben Volin has admitted that the tip he was given regarding Mac Jones’ “attitude problem” was actually fake.

On Wednesday, Volin said on “The Greg Hill Show” that he received a direct message from a source saying that Mac Jones had an obvious attitude problem. Volin said that the source was someone around the Patriots and that it was credible. In reality, the tip was completely made up by a Barstool fan.

The fan was shocked that Volin believed him and ran with the story. The fan posted his conversation with Volin to Twitter. In the conversation, he said he has, “a buddy who works over at Gillette selling season ticket packages.” He also said that the Patriots started Brian Hoyer over Bailey Zappe because Jones made it clear he did not want Zappe stepping in. As it turns out, none of what the fan said was true and it completely fooled Volin.

Many may question how someone who is a journalist did not check the credibility of their source first. But for Volin, it seems as though he was using any excuse possible to slander Mac Jones. Just one night prior, Volin said that Mac Jones needed to be humbled.

While it is true that there has been controversy surrounding Mac Jones as of late, it is still inexcusable for Volin to make a mistake like this. Volin has since apologized for trusting the tip saying, “I should not have spoken of the DM without vetting it first. No excuses, it won’t happen again.”

It is hilarious to think that a journalist could be so easily fooled by just the average person. Ben Volin appears to have been looking for the easiest way to slander Mac Jones, no matter what it was. What he got instead was a fake tip and a world of backlash behind it.
