Expect a Battle Between Navas and Donnarumma at PSG – Navas No. 1
French giants Paris Saint-Germain have had an impressive summer transfer window to date. The signings of Sergio Ramos and Achraf Hakimi strengthen the backline, with Georginio Wijnaldum joining in the midfield. The Ligue 1 side has a wealth of talent, but with that much depth inevitably comes position battles. And no battle may be more important than the one between the sticks, as newly signed goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma seeks to unseat veteran Keylor Navas for PSG.
Donnarumma, 22, joined PSG on a free transfer from AC Milan. The Italian international has starred for Roberto Mancini’s squad in the 2020 Euros, conceding just three times in six matches. Navas, on the other hand, is aging and did not appear for Costa Rica in their CONCACAF Nations League semifinal in June. The 34-year-old did sign an extension until 2024 with the club earlier this year.
While Donnarumma’s signing indicates a possible changing of the guard for PSG in the coming years, sources close to ESPN said that Navas will remain the No. 1 choice for the club. Navas was angered by the sudden signing of the Italian goalkeeper but will remain at the club, according to the French newspaper L’Equipe. The Costa Rican international appeared in 29 Ligue 1 matches last season for the club, conceding 18 goals and keeping a clean sheet 15 times.
With the club reportedly confirming that Navas will start the season as the No. 1 choice, it does not mean that Donnarumma can’t take his place between the posts for PSG. Expect both goalkeepers to battle throughout the season as every clean sheet and goal means just a bit more.
