After being denied the opportunity by ESPN in January of 2020, Barstool Sports will sponsor the Arizona Bowl Game at the end of this college football season. Emily Caron from Sportico broke the news first, beating Dave Portnoy himself.
Barstool being the official sponsor for the game is not the surprising move here, that always seemed inevitable. The most notable part of this is that they will stream the game exclusively on their own website, and run all of the socials themselves.
ESPN, which is failing miserably in a lot of ways, shut down their previous chance in 2020 because they did not want to utter the words “Barstool Sports” on their airways. They should have kept their attention in-house because their employees all hate each other.
Portnoy put out an Emergency Press Conference and shared more of the details, but most notably this is a multi-year contract, not just a one and done.
“We control everything, the bowl, the broadcast, the hafl time show, the national anthem. We are getting into the live sports broadcast game. You know what this means? The moon is a little bit closer.”
Dave Portnoy
I’m sure Big Cat will sing the National Anthem, the halftime show will feature Caleb and Rone. Barstool has a variety of talents that could make this game interesting. Jake Marsh can do play by play, Kayce Smith can go back to her roots and be a sideline reporter, the list goes on.
Barstool hired tons of people this summer to promote their sportsbook with Penn National, so I am sure that will be a featured part of the broadcast as well. As well as sponsoring individual college athletes with the Barstool Athletics Inc.
UPDATE: Barstool Big Cat might jump out of a plane, AND sing the National Anthem….
