Asante Samuel has been wanting all the smoke as of late. The former Patriots cornerback just got done trading shots with rookie phenom Sauce Gardner and Darrelle Revis on Twitter about a week ago. Now, Samuel has moved on to taking shots at his former coach, Bill Belichick.
It wouldn’t be the first time Samuel threw barbs at his former team. He’s made a lot of efforts to diminish Belichick’s legacy over the past two years.
In 2021, in response to a Louis Riddick tweet calling Belichick “cold blooded,” Samuel took it a step further:
Cold blooded is a understatement! But without Brady he is just another coach in my opinion https://t.co/FvNocsC2UF

There’s still some bad blood between Samuel and Belichick, obviously. Although Samuel racked up 22 interceptions and two Super Bowl rings in five years with the New England Patriots, he’s probably been the most vocal anti-Belichick player.
This bad blood stems from Samuel not being able to get an extension with the New England dynasty. After recording 16 interceptions in his final two years with the Patriots, Samuel departed for Philadelphia.
When asked by CBS if Belichick is the greatest coach in the NFL’s history, Samuel made sure he let the world knew how he felt.
“ABSOLUTELY NOT, are you crazy?” Samuel told Bryant McFadden of CBS. “Look at his record without Tom (Brady)! You got to win without Tom. You got to win without Tom. One thing I learned about being great, you have to be great in different situations.”
“Everybody know it, Tom know it,” Samuel boldly added. “But he ain’t gonna admit because he wanna be politically correct. That’s why I’m here. Imma tell the truth.”
Is Bill Belichick the best coach in NFL history?

Under Belichick and Brady, the Patriots played in nine Super Bowls and won six. They also had 19 consecutive winning seasons, including an undefeated 16-game regular season in 2007. The duo racked up 17 division titles and 13 AFC Championship game appearances. The Patriots appeared in half of all Super Bowls played during Brady’s 18 seasons as the primary starter and won six (tied for the most ever) of those they played in.
When Brady left for Tampa Bay, he appeared in two divisional playoff games, two NFC Championship games and won his seventh Super Bowl. He had a 32-18 record, amassed 14,643 yards and 108 touchdowns.
On the flipside, Belichick has been ok without Brady. His record stands at 79-87 and he’s never had a conference championship appearance. With the new age Patriots and Mac Jones, Belichick has one wild card game appearance and two losing seasons.
While still an excellent defensive head coach, Belichick is terrible at drafting offensive talent. In the first five rounds of the 2023 NFL Draft, the Patriots selected a cornerback, a defensive end, three offensive lineman, a linebacker and a punter.
The Patriots recently gave DeVante Parker an extension, and signed JuJu Smith-Schuster to a three-year deal — two receivers who are at the bottom of the league at getting separation. Jones is under pressure to have a good year with no talent around him.
Bill Belichick may be on the hot seat for the 2023 season, so we’ll see what New England brings to the table this season.
