Arsenal Acquires Goalie David Raya
The Gunners are adding some goalie competition right before the start of the Premier League season. Arsenal will acquire Brentford netminder David Raya. The Spanish goalie will compete with the incumbent Aaron Ramsdale.
Fabrizio Ramano was the first to report the news.
The financial fair play thing is a huge detail that is noted here. Arsenal has already spent so much money this transfer window adding Declan Rice (link), Kai Havertz (link), and Jurrien Timber (link). Rice alone cost over $100 million. The fact that Arsenal could push the money down the road a bit is a major deal.
It remains to be seen who gets the lionshare of work for goalie at Arsenal. Ramsdale really established himself as a top option for a quality team in the Premier League a season ago. Ramsdale posted 14 cleansheets in the Premier League last season.
Ramsdale isn’t shy away from the competition.
“Bring it on. Nothing comes easy in football. At the same time you need to move along and adapt as well. I’ve done it to other people when I’ve moved clubs. So I’m not going to be thinking that’s it’s never going to happen to me.
“If it happens, it happens and then we’ll fight and we’ll make each other the best version of ourselves because that’s what the manager is telling us as well.
“And I’m sure whoever plays, me or whoever comes in, the goalkeeping union people laugh at but it’s a real thing and your individual disappointment will go away. You will put the team first and you’ll put that goalkeeper first as well.”
It should also be noted that Matt Turner agreed a deal worth up to £10m to join Nottingham Forest. The American gets a larger opportunity with a lower level club.
