What to Expect with Anthony Santander with the Blue Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays signed All-Star outfielder Anthony Santander. One of the best power bats in baseball, Santander’s addition to the Blue Jays signals the team’s commitment to continue to field a competitive team.

Santander, 30, has spent his entire career with the Baltimore Orioles. Where he developed into one of the league’s premier sluggers. In the 2023 season, he posted numbers, including a .271 batting average, 33 home runs, and 95 RBIs. His ability to hit for power from both sides of the plate earned him this contract of $92.5 million. Not to mention his 2024 campaign, where he won the silver slugger and crushed a career-high 44 home runs.

Santander joins a Blue Jays core featuring Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, and Daulton Varsho. The regression of Toronto’s offense last year outside of Guererro. The Blue Jays will need any help they can get. Santander’s presence should allow Guererro more protection. However, he didn’t need it, seemingly with his tremendous 2024 campaign.

Many hope Toronto can see a bounce-back season for Bo Bichette in 2025. Santander’s acquisition will also move the team in the right direction to better position themselves, with their primary goal: resigning Vladimir Guererro Jr.

After disappointing exits in playoffs over the last few seasons and missing the postseason altogether in 2024. The Blue Jays were determined to bring in key players, although they had little luck with players such as Juan Soto and Corbin Burnes

Although Santander is now in the fold; the Blue Jays may not be done making moves. Rumors suggest that the team is still exploring options to bolster their roster further.

A vital note will be Santander leaving the confines of Camden Yards, where he had the benefits of being a lefty and the hardships of being a righty in that ballpark. A ballpark that has had renovations in left field in recent years, for better or worse. Being in the Rogers Centre, Santander’s production should balance out in terms of his home and away splits. he was more effective as a lefty bat and, more importantly, away from his home ballpark.

As MLB gears up for spring training, only time will tell how impactful Anthony Santander will be for the Blue Jays overall. One thing is sure: Toronto’s lineup just got better.
