American Auston Trusty Leaves Arsenal, Joins Sheffield United

USMNT defender Auston Trusty will join newly-promoted Premier League side Sheffield United from Arsenal, according to Fabrizio Romano. Sheffield United will pay a £5 million ($6.4 million) transfer fee to secure his services.

The 24-year-old center-back has had a meteoric rise ever since he moved from the Colorado Rapids in the MLS to Arsenal last year. Initially, his transfer was puzzling. While Trusty was a decent center-back in the MLS, he looked unlikely to play in a top-five league, let alone for Arsenal.

However, he excelled while on loan at Birmingham City in the English Championship last year. Trusty earned a starting spot in Birmingham’s backline quickly after being loaned to the club and took his chance.

He went on to be a key player for Birmingham, appearing in 44 games for the club, and his contributions won him Birmingham City’s Player of the Year award. He has also earned two caps for the USMNT due to his club form.

Despite his good season with Birmingham, Mikel Arteta has deemed Trusty surplus to requirements. He will be sold without ever touching the field for Arsenal in a competitive game. Trusty will, however, not be taking too much of a step-down. He will be suiting up for Sheffield United in the Premier League next season.

This is a good signing for Sheffield United. Trusty is a physical center-back who also has a fair amount of pace, attributes that helped him succeed in the Championship last year. He is left-footed and can play as a left-sided center-back in a four-back and a three-back and can play as a left-back if need to.

Sheffield United needs defensive reinforcements if they want to stay in the Premier League. Trusty can not only add defensive depth but can also go on to become a key player for the Blades next year.

Arsenal, meanwhile, will look to continue selling players ahead of the new season. American goalkeeper Matt Turner is expected to be another player sold this summer with Nottingham Forest showing interest.
