Tim Bontempts over at ESPN wrote a nice column today about the Celtics hot start. One section details how the Celtics had a six-player meeting to decide who would come off the bench. Al Horford is the odd man out and has since been coming off the bench. In reality, it’s the best thing that’s happened to this organization. Horford finally has the perfect role in Boston.
The Kristaps Porzingis trade along with the addition of Jrue Holiday has totally changed the trajectory of the franchise. Holiday is essentially a better version of Marcus Smart. However, Porzingis gives this team something that they truly need to get over the hump.
Over the last couple of years, Boston simply hasn’t had enough offense in the frontcourt. Horford is in the back 9 of his career and just isn’t the same guy as he was during his prime in Atlanta. Robert Williams was a really nice shot blocker and lob threat but couldn’t stretch the floor. Adding Porzingis has given the Celtics everything they’ve needed. The Celtics starting five is the best in the league and it’s not close.
The Celtics were never going to win a title with Horford in the starting lineup. They sure as hell were never going to win a title with Horford playing over 30 minutes per night. Now he’s down to 24 minutes a night and has played the role of being able to hit shots from the outside while being a functional defender as a backup big. This is exactly what the Celtics needed from him.
I still have nightmares of Horford being switched onto Steph Curry in the Finals and not being able to put the ball in the basket. Porzingis takes care of so many of the offensive woes that played this team in the past. The C’s finally have the right role for Horford and they’re better for it.
