AEW Dynamite Results and Review (12/14/22): The Upset of the Century

AEW Dynamite was filled with must-see action. There was a lot that happened, some more shocking than others.

This episode felt more like the Dynamites when AEW first started. The crowd was heavily invested, and the matches were amazing. Over the past few months, AEW seemingly lost its excitement, and it was showing with the crowd. But since AEW got The Elite back, the company seems to be on its way to getting restored to its former glory.

This episode was definitely one of the better episodes of Dynamite in a long time, so let’s go over exactly what happened on AEW Dynamite.

Death Triangle vs. The Elite

The Elite and Death Triangle are competing in a best-of-seven series to see who will become the undisputed AEW Trios Champions.

The Elite had to relinquish their Trios Championships following their suspension a few months ago. Since then, Death Triangle has held the titles and defeated anyone who challenged them.

Heading into the match, Death Triangle was up 2-1 on The Elite. IfTthe Elite wanted to avoid a devastating 3-1 deficit; they need to get a win.

Well, sometimes not everything goes your way and that was exactly what happened on AEW Dynamite. Nick Jackson suffered an ankle injury early in the match and had to go to the back to get it looked at. As a result, The Elite were faced with a one-man deficit for the majority of the match. Jackson would eventually return to the match to help even the odds, though Death Triangle proved to be one step ahead of The Elite once again.

Once Jackson returned, it was clear that Death Triangle was going to target his ankle and that they did. Jackson went for a kick on Rey Fenix, but Fenix caught his foot and Penta hit Jackson’s ankle with the ring bell hammer. Thus, making Death Triangle victorious yet again thanks to the ring bell hammer.

Now, The Elite are down 3-1, which is almost impossible to come back from in sports. But following the match, Kenn Omega grabbed a mic and wanted to make their next match a No DQ match. AEW CEO, Tony Khan, made it official but that wasn’t all. If the series goes to the sixth match, it will be a Falls Count Anywhere match, and if it goes to the seventh, that one will be a Escalara De La Muerte match.

Backstage with MJF

MJF was backstage ahead of his AEW World Championship match against Ricky Starks. MJF delivered a brutal promo against Starks. He claimed he was a “star-maker” and said, “you’re welcome for the rub, Rick.”

The Acclaimed Gets Blindsided

The Acclaimed were coming down to the ring, but before Max Caster could perform his rap, they were attacked. Jay Lethal, Satnam Singh, Sonjay Dutt and Jeff Jarrett attacked The Acclaimed from behind. They brought The Acclaimed in the ring and Jarrett hit Caster over the head with his guitar. Their intentions were made very clear following this attack on AEW Dynamite.

Backstage with Chris Jericho

Chris Jericho was backstage with the rest of the Jericho Appreciation Society. He was angry about losing his ROH World Championship at Final Battle and said he was going to take it out on some jobber.

Jericho also stated he wanted a rematch against the new ROH World Champion, Claudio Castagnoli. Sammy Guevara also challenged Jon Moxley to match on AEW Rampage, which was made official.

Brian Cage vs. Jungle Boy

Jungle Boy has been the victim of The Firm’s attacks of late. Most recently, Big Bill choke slammed Jungle Boy on the side of the ring apron in the Dynamite Diamond Battle Royal. But Jungle Boy likes to wrestle, so he showed up on AEW Dynamite to take on a third of the ROH Six Man Tag Team Champions, Brian Cage.

Jungle Boy was giving up a clear size advantage in the match, but what he gave up in size, he made up for in heart. It was clear that Prince Nana, leader of the Embassy, was going to get involved and that’s exactly what he did.

Still, Jungle Boy was able to overcome the outside interference and roll up Cage for the win.

Following the match, Jungle Boy called out Big Bill and The Firm, which proved not to be the smartest idea. Out came the leader of the Firm, Stokely Hathaway, but Lee Moriarty and Big Bill weren’t far behind. Moriarty and Bill brutally attacked Jungle Boy until HOOK came to the rescue. Once HOOK appeared, Moriarty and Bill fled the scene. It’s clear the beef from these men is far from over.

Backstage With Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, And Wheeler Yuta

The Blackpool Combat Club stated that 2023 was going to be their year. Moxley said he was going to stomp Guevara’s face in on AEW Rampage and told Hangman Page he knows where to find him.

House of Black vs. The Factory

The House of Black returned to AEW a couple of weeks ago. They wreaked havoc immediately on anyone and everyone in AEW. Well on AEW Dynamite, they continued their brutal streak.

Julia Hart spits the black mist into the eyes of Nick Comoroto, while Brody King and Buddy Murphy attacked Aaron Solo and Cole Karter. Malakai Black and QT Marshall stood in the ring until the referee rings the bell. Black immediately hits QT with the Black Mass and wins the match. It was a purely dominant and violent win for the House of Black.

Chris Jericho vs. Action Andretti

Earlier in the night, Jericho claimed he was going to take out his frustrations on a jobber. But that isn’t quite how things went down.

Jericho was in control for most of the match but was having trouble putting away Action Andretti. Andretti proved he had heart by never giving up in the match. He got a few flurries of offense in on Jericho as well. This surprised Jericho and took him off guard.

Ultimately, Jericho may have let his frustrations get the best of him because he went on the lose the match to Andretti. This is truly the upset of the century and Khan took to Twitter to announce that Action Andretti is officially All Elite.

Ruby Soho vs. Tay Melo

Tay Melo put Ruby Soho on the shelf a few months ago when Soho suffered a severely broken nose and had surgery. Soho returned last week and attacked Melo. Well, the two women got to settle their beef in the ring on AEW Dynamite.

The match didn’t start in the ring because Melo attacked Soho while she was on the entranceway. The two women fought outside of the ring before the match even started. Melo got in some solid offense including a Gotch-style piledriver, but it wasn’t enough. Soho proved she had Melo scouted and ultimately got the win after she hit the destination unknown.

Following the match, Anna Jay ran to the ring and attacked Soho. She slammed Soho’s previously broken nose into the mat.

Backstage with Hangman Page

Hangman Page was backstage getting checked on by a doctor. He gave us an update on his current medical condition. Page told a chilling story about when he suffered a concussion a few weeks ago on AEW Dynamite. He said he was ready to fight Moxley on Friday and delivered an incredible little promo.

AEW World Championship Match

Ricky Starks vs. MJF (c)

This was MJF’s first title defense since winning the AEW World Championship at Full Gear. But if what MJF has said in the past is true, these title defenses will become rare.

Meanwhile, Ricky Starks won the World Title Eliminator Tournament and the Dynamite Diamond Battle Royale to earn himself this opportunity. This was by far Starks’ biggest opportunity of his career.

Early on, MJF proved to be one step ahead and did his usual cocky antics in the process. Still, Starks proved he can hang with MJF as he got in his fair share of offense as well. In typical MJF fashion though, he had to cheat to win.

When Starks was gaining momentum and had MJF against the ropes, MJF hid behind the ref. When Starks moved the ref out of the way, MJF kicked Starks below the belt when the ref’s back was turned. MJF then rolled up Starks and retained both his AEW World Championship and the Dynamite Diamond Ring.

But as MJF was leaving the ring, Bryan Danielson returned and chased him out of the arena. Danielson made his intentions very clear on AEW Dynamite.
