In Advance Of GTA 6, Let’s Rank Every Grand Theft Auto Video Game

I know why you’re here. Intro paragraphs just aren’t necessary all of the time. We’re ranking all of the Grand Theft Auto games ever created. Feel free to comment if you disagree with any parts of the list!

14: Grand Theft Auto: London, 1969

13: Grand Theft Auto: London, 1961

12: Grand Theft Auto

11: Grand Theft Auto 2

11-14 are Honorable Mention. Not enough experience playing each game.

10: Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

Anything before this list feels like it was designed for the boomers so I’m not going to go into the weeds there. Chinatown Wars cracks the list at 10 but this game is also niche in its own right. Chinatown Wars is mostly for handheld use only. PSP, Nintendo DS, and iOS devices are where you can play this. It’s okay in the sense that you can do some cool things with the touch screen. Other than that, this game really isn’t it.

9: Grand Theft Auto Vice City Stories

Vice City Stories serves as a prequel to Vice City. It’s less expansive than Vice City and isn’t really advanced graphically compared to the good version. It kinda follows the same story. A drug deal gone bad and you have to crawl your way out of it after being sent home from the military. It’s fine.

8: Grand Theft Auto 3

GTA 3 is when the series really picked up. Liberty City is a great map and everything you know GTA to be came to light in this game. It’s really the first game where GTA becomes a 3D version of itself. The dialogue is kinda boring and your character has no real redeeming qualities. Still, GTA 3 serves as a the lifeline that sparked the entire series and it should be appreciated.

7: Grand Theft Auto 4: The Lost And The Damned

GTA 4 was a damn good series and the spin-offs have their own playability. The only downside of this game is the fact that it’s about a biker gang. On the surface, it’s really fun. The only problem is you are thrown into several missions trying to drive a bike around while shooting a gun trying to be accurate. Creates a lot of frustration! Still, it’s a really fun game and the story gets interesting.

6: Grand Theft Auto 4: The Ballad Of Gay Tony

I’d say The Lost and the Damned game was better in the sense that you’re not running around with a chicken with its head cut off. The Ballad of Gay Tony is essentially about this bodyguard named Luis Lopez and how he does everything to protect Tony. It becomes a bit tiring running missions that seem outrageous.

It’s not all bad though. The nightlife creates a really interesting dynamic and the missions are creative. The annoying element of crashing a bike isn’t in this game either. It’s just a bit limited given that it’s a spin-off. You can get through each pretty fast.

5: Grand Theft Auto 5

Maybe I’m in the minority… but I don’t like GTA 5. I’ve said exactly that in a post in the past. This game should be called Grand Theft Favor. You don’t make any money for the longest time and it’s so annoying. Once you have money, the game is over and there is no point in playing anymore. All of the focus went into the online version. The back-and-forth with the three characters just doesn’t work.

If it wasn’t for the fact that this is the newest iteration of the game and just looks better graphically, this would be lower on the list. I genuinely hate this game and it’s a damn shame Rockstar stood proud over this game for over a decade without releasing another version.

4: Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories

Prequel to GTA 3 but it looks a little better graphically. It’s not super different than GTA 3. You get revenge on some guy who betrayed your former partner. Work your way towards completing the job. It’s a fastball down the middle. Maybe I’m just a fan of the Liberty City map but you can have fun in this game. It’s released five years after GTA 3 so it’s just a bit better put together. Mostly the dialogue and the story behind it.

3: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

Now we’re getting somewhere. 3-1 in the rankings is tier one. This is when GTA really started to figure out how to make the character development interesting. A drug deal goes bad and you need to figure it out. But there is so many cool things you can do in the city. Drive tanks, hit up clubs, drive boats, etc. The nightlife creates a beautiful city. It has a real Scarface feel to the game and I appreciate that.

2: Grant Theft Auto: San Andreas

Easily the best GTA game in terms of the variety of things you can do. You can make your character fat, skinny, muscular, etc. The map is insane. The way you can build up your family is by winning turf wars. The missions are actually hard and take time to master. It’s by far the most unique iteration of the game and will never truly go out of style. It’s peak PS2 gaming.

1:  Grand Theft Auto 4

This is easily the best GTA game and it’s not close. Nico Bellic tries to make his name as an Eastern European immigrant. The graphics finally start to become really good and the storyline is incredible. Takes you for twists and turns that you don’t expect. The game also takes super long to beat. Missions upon missions and that’s what you want. The storyline is so good that you could make a movie out of it. As you build with Nico, you feel part of the story too. The dynamic of him committing crime while also being a nice guy is perfect too. Thus far, this is the king. I hope GTA 6 can beat it.
