It is no longer up to interpretation. Joel Embiid isn’t a winning player and the 76ers are totally screwed as long as they’re hitched to his wagon. Anyone who disagrees is wrong.
The biggest problem with the 76ers is that they have no culture. From the time Embiid was a rookie, he was told it was okay to lose because they were continuing to tank. That mentality has continued to transpire year after year despite being years removed from the Sam Hinkie era.
The guy is a total bum. Embiid, 30, has played in three of the 13 games to start this season. Somehow he was healthy enough to play in the Olympics but not healthy enough to suit up for the team that actually pays him a salary. Forget about playing back to back’s. The guy doesn’t play period.
What’s the strategy here? Somehow the 76ers believe that Embiid is just going to flick some sort of magical switch where he turns it on when the playoffs get here. Right now the 76ers have the worst record in the league and may not even make the playoffs. Even if Philly misses the playoffs, how foolish do you have to be to think Embiid will carry you after months go by of not working hard?
Culture. That’s the biggest problem with Philly and specifically Embiid. He’s not in shape. He looks disinterested even when he does play. He clearly doesn’t practice either. The guy just doesn’t get it and lacks self awareness. Now throw in the new report that Tyrese Maxey (one of the few players on their team who you can tell actually works hard) called out Embiid for showing up late to everything…
Speaking of that report. How about this line in the article:
“Players told 76ers coach Nick Nurse they want to be coached harder, and coaches in turn said they want players to practice with purpose and attention to detail.”
This is what happens when you go down the nerd route and analytics dictates how you run your team. Players want to work hard and be coached hard… with the exception of Embiid who remains out of shape and doesn’t work hard. I’m sure giving Embiid a ridiculous contract extension to never play will make him get in shape!
The 76ers are going nowhere as long as Joel Embiid is on the roster. The guy is never going to get it. The only chance he has is if another team brings him in as the third guy and other leaders whip him into shape. As the franchise icon in Philly, this puppy is never going to lead to any legitimate success and it’s so obvious.
