Does Joel Embiid want to be a Boston Celtic?
Year after year, the Boston Celtics continue to dominate the Philadelphia 76ers in and out of the playoffs. After each loss, 76ers center Joel Embiid praises the Boston Celtics and with tension looming around the 76ers franchise, does Embiid really want to join his rival squad?
Most recently, Boston handled the 76ers Wednesday without two of their star players (Jaylen Brown and Kristaps Porzingis) with ease, beating their rivals 117-107, thanks to standout performances from Jayson Tatum, Jrue Holiday, Derrick White and Sam Hauser. The Celtics were able to fend off Embiid and the 76ers to capture first place in the East.
After the loss, Embiid sounded defeated talking to the media. Last year’s MVP called the Celtics the best team in the league and wasn’t afraid to openly admit it.
“We’re professional athletes, That’s the schedule; you just gotta do it,” Embiid said. “But yeah, tough. Especially playing Indiana twice and then on a back-to-back, playing the best team in the league, it’s tough. But no excuses.”
Embiid has spoken openly about the Celtics-76ers rivalry in the past. Embiid doesn’t even view the two teams as rivals, and the reigning MVP’s reasoning behind it: The Celtics always kick the 76ers’ ass.
“This is not a rivalry. I don’t know our record against them, but it’s pretty bad. They always kick our ass.”
Embiid and the 76ers won’t face off against the Boston Celtics until Dec.1 in Boston. After that, the foes will have a break from each other until the second half of the season–next calendar year on Feb. 27, the teams will travel back to Boston once again.
