The Philadelphia 76ers have been spiraling to start the 2024-25 season. They suffered a 17-point loss to the Miami Heat, who were playing on the second night of a back-to-back, Monday evening, dropping to 2-11 on the season.
According to ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania, the team held a meeting after the game. Though one very key detail emerged: Star guard Tyrese Maxey called out center Joel Embiid due to alleged tardiness “to everything.”
“Maxey challenged Embiid to be on time to team activities, calling out the 2022-23 league MVP about being late ‘for everything’ and how it impacts the locker room, from other players to the coaching staff,” Charania wrote Tuesday. “Maxey and Embiid have a close friendship and a history of holding each other accountable, according to those around the team. … Maxey is highly regarded as a young leader by many in the organization and those around the team were not surprised that he spoke up Monday.”
First off, my eyebrows raise about leaking this type of information right away. I’m not sure who it is, but it is very interesting that it was leaked as quick as it was.
Embiid has been one of, if not the premier face of the franchise since being drafted No. 3 overall by Philadelphia in the 2014 NBA Draft, even though he missed his first two seasons due to injury. Embiid’s developed into one of the best centers in the NBA, winning an MVP in 2022-23 while leading the league in scoring in back-to-back seasons (2021-22, ’22-23).
Though he hasn’t been available when the team’s needed him most; he hasn’t always played at his best, either. The seven-time All-Star has missed all but three games due to a nagging knee injury that kept him out the preseason after he played for Team USA during the summer.
Daryl Morey’s made it clear that he building the roster around Embiid, regardless of how successful–or unsuccessful, given their expectations–it’s gone. He went out and signed Paul George to a four-year max contract during the summer while re-signing Maxey, and tantalizing guard who’s arguably been their most dependable star.
George isn’t getting any younger, nor is Embiid. Philadelphia has a finite window to win the title, and if they don’t, “The Process” going to be viewed as a failure. The clock continues to tick.
