Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid has signed a three-year max extension with the organization, NBA insider Shams Charania first reported Friday morning. The deal will have a player option in the final season.
As a result of this extension, which won’t begin until 2026-27, Embiid will be on the hook for over $300 million for the next five seasons, Charania notes. Considering Jaylen Brown‘s original $300 million reported deal got docked down to $285.4 million because of the 3.3 percent cap raise, Embiid and Celtics star Jayson Tatum are the only two players in NBA History with at least $300 million guaranteed through 2028-29.
Embiid voiced his pleasure in signing his new extension Friday morning on Instagram:
“Philadelphia is home,” he wrote. “I want to be here for the rest of my career. I love this community and everything you’ve given me and my family. There is a lot more work to do. You guys deserve a championship and I think we’re just getting started!”
Current cap projections suggest his three cap hits will be $59.5 million, $64.3 million and $69.1 million (player option), per Spotrac. Like it did for Brown’s aforementioned extension, those numbers could change. Though with the new TV deal, I expect the league to have at least an 8-9 percent raise each year–if not the max 10 percent, which these project.
Embiid is a two-time scoring champ and the league MVP winner in 2022-23, averaging 33.1 points and 10.2 rebounds on 54.8 percent shooting from the floor and 33.0 percent from 3-point range. Last year, the 7-foot big man was limited to just 39 games after suffering a torn meniscus, despite having one of the best statistical seasons of his career.
The 7-foot big man still has yet to make a conference finals. The 76ers added veteran wing Paul George to the mix this offseason, so expectations will be heightened. Can Embiid stay healthy? Can he, Tyrese Maxey and George finally propel the 76ers to destiny? What if they don’t capitalize on this 1-2 window that George has before he reaches 36-years-old?
Expectations were already high. Now Embiid’s set to make $300 million with over $400 million committed to George and Tyrese Maxey … what could go wrong?
