I cannot believe that I am saying this but I think the San Antonio Spurs may be able to make a deep run in the playoffs. And it’s not because of their core built around All-Stars DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge. It’s not because of soon to be star sophomore Lonnie Walker IV. Hell, it’s not even because of Hall of Fame head coach and 5 time Champion Gregg Popovich. It’s because one of their retired superstars just signed on to be an assistant coach. That’s right 5 time NBA champion and MVP, Tim Duncan, aka Mr. Fundamental and arguably the best power forward to ever play basketball is now an assistant coach on the Spurs.
This is huge guys. Not only do the Spurs have one of the greatest to ever do it on their bench now, but this opens up so many doors for them. Potentially, if all goes well, Duncan could be being groomed to take over the reins of the franchise that he helped turn into a dynasty. Popovich was quoted saying in a press release:
“It is only fitting, that after I served loyally for 19 years as Tim Duncan’s assistant, that he returns the favor.” This is so much bigger than people realize considering people have been questioning Pop’s longevity for the last
couple years now.”
Mr. Fundamental is also going to play a huge role in the development of the Spurs’ young talent. Most notably 2018 first-round pick Lonnie Walker IV. Walker killed it this season in the summer league, and yeah it may only be the summer league, he still has a very impressive resume and not to mention work ethic. I feel like this only solidifies what I stated last week about Lonnie being my pick for break out star of the 2019-2020 season. Duncan is going to make sure that the Spurs’ dynasty not only
