Spencer Carbery Determined To Aid Ovechkin Goal Scoring Record

Does Spencer Carbery have Ovie’s stamp of approval? If not, he might have it soon. Alex Ovechkin is 73 goals away from the NHL goal-scoring record. Carbery wants to make sure Ovechkin eventually gets there and passes Wayne Gretzky.

Carbery’s comments came during his initial press conference with Washington:

“It’s a huge responsibility for me as a head coach. … It’s my job as a head coach to put him in situations where he can be successful,” Carbery said during his introductory press conference Thursday. “That’s what my challenge is, and I don’t take that lightly at all.

“That’ll work into how we play as a group. That’ll be one of my focuses – how do we put him in situations to succeed?”

Carbery, 41, is known as a powerplay specialist. Carbery was announced as the 20th head coach in Capitals history on Tuesday and is expected to work extensively on the Capitals’ special teams unit. Over the last two years manning Toronto’s, the Leafs cashed in with the second ranked unit in the league with a success rate of 26.6%. The Capitals’ power play will be a “main focus”. Washington ranked 16th in the league for the 22-23 season after converting on 21.2% of its opportunities.

“I’ve followed their power play very, very closely over the last two years, watched them all,” he said. “I think there’s some things that we can do there.”

Ovechkin is already the NHL leader in powerplay goals with 299. Scoring even more on the man advantage will certainly help his cause in chasing down Gretzky.
