Washington Capitals hire Spencer Carbery as Head Coach

After only two seasons as the Toronto Maple Leafs assistant coach, the Washington Capitals hire Spencer Carbery as their next head coach, the team announced Tuesday.

“We are extremely pleased to name Spencer as our new head coach,” said general manager Brian MacLellan via release. “Spencer is one of the best young coaches in the game who’s had success at every level at which he has coached. We feel his leadership, communication skills, ability to develop players and familiarity with our organization will be a tremendous asset as he makes this next step in his coaching career.”

In Toronto, Carbery was responsible for the Leafs’ power play and the team’s forwards. In the two seasons he spent as the assistant coach, the Leafs had an average of 26 percent and 27.3 percent, respectively. Both years were close to league-leading percentage, only behind select teams.

The 41-year-old becomes the 20th head coach in Washington Capitals history, after they fired Peter Laviolette.

“It’s a tremendous honor and privilege to be named the head coach of the Washington Capitals,” said Carbery. “I would like to thank the Capitals organization for affording me the opportunity to lead this team. I look forward to working with this group of talented players and building upon the winning culture in place.

He would later go on to thank the Maple Leafs for the past two years.

“I would also like to thank the Toronto Maple Leafs organization for all their support over the past two years and wish them all the best in the future.”

Can Carbery turn the Capitals woes around next season, after missing the postseason this year? Does Washington have one last championship run left in them? Be sure to let us know in the comments.
