Are The Stars Desperate To Trade Jamie Benn?

We need to have a chat about Jamie Benn.

The Jamie Benn contract is a problem and there is no other way around it. We know he’s a scumbag now too but we went over that the other day. In the six-game series loss to the VGK, Dallas only won the two games Benn was suspended for. I just want to share this Spittin Chiclets clip because it’s exactly how I felt.

Benn, 33, didn’t have a bad season at all posting 78 points in 82 games. It was a major step up from the 43 points he had a year ago. The playoffs, however, Benn looked a lot like the guy from the regular season before where he struggled. The eye test doesn’t lie. Fredrik Olofsson provided more of a spark in the lineup during that VGK series. Check out this cheese from Corey Sznajder.

Benn is owed an AAV of $9.5 million in 2023-24 and 24-25. There might be a way to get out of the contract but it’s a stinker. The worst part is the Tyler Seguin contract, who is owed an AAV of $9.85 through the 27 season, might be the single worst deal in the league. Outside of winning the occasional faceoff, Seguin provides next to nothing. Seguin, 31, posted nine points and a -8 rating in 19 playoff games this postseason. We have known this for a while but he’s not the same guy and the hip condition is an issue.

The Stars have a really good hockey team. It’s the reason why they made the conference finals. The young core of Jason Robertson, Roope Hintz, Miro Heiskanen, and Jake Oettinger is as good as it gets. The bloated contracts of Seguin and Benn have to go or this team has absolutely no chance to get over the hump. I have no idea how you can move those contracts but it needs to be Dallas’ top priority this Summer.
