Josh Allen has become one of the NFL’s most athletic and mobile quarterbacks. But with that mobility, Allen also needs to be careful with his running. Now, the Buffalo Bills franchise quarterback said he needs to play safer as his career goes on.
Last season, Allen had arguably the best rushing campaign of his career. On 124 attempts for 762 yards, Allen was one yard short of tying his rushing record (763). Allen also rushed for seven touchdowns on the season. In four of his five seasons, Allen has over 100 rushing attempts as well as 500 rushing yards.
“I’ve always had the mindset of, I’ve been a football player first and a quarterback second,” Allen said, according to Lorenzo Reyes of USA TODAY, via theScore. “At some point, that is going to have to switch. When that point is, I don’t know. I guess I’ll let my body tell me. It sounds crazy, but I’m getting older.”
Although Allen has been one of the most prolific runners, he is no stranger to injuries. The soon to be 27-year-old quarterback has battled injuries through his entire football career, including in college. At Wyoming, Allen suffered three injuries to his shoulder, including two clavicle fractures. Last season, Allen suffered a UCL injury late in Week 9 that lingered towards the playoffs.
“I do want to be the smartest quarterback with the football in my hands,” Allen said, via theScore. “I don’t want to put the football in harm’s way because I know how detrimental that is to our team with the interceptions and the fumbles.”
Allen is heading into his sixth NFL season with the Buffalo Bills. After heartbreaking losses in his past seasons, Allen and the rest of the Bills are looking to make the team’s first Super Bowl appearance since 1993 in hopes of breaking the franchise’s cursed years.
