San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich reportedly suffered a medical emergency Tuesday evening while at a restaurant, TMZ reported Friday.
The Hall of Fame head coach reportedly left in an ambulance after the restaurant received a call about an “elderly person who had fainted,” the report read.
Popovich, 76, spent most of the 2024-25 season away from the sidelines after suffering a mild stroke in early November. Reports surfaced in late February that his future was in jeopardy, even though there has not been a decision made at the time of this publishing. Assistant Mitch Johnson has been the head coach in the interim.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Popovich is currently “home, stable and doing fine.”
Popovich is widely considered to be one of the best coaches not only in basketball history, but American sports history.
He entered the season having won over 2,250 games with 170 playoff victories, five NBA Titles and three Coach of the Year awards. He’s also helped Team USA to win Gold in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics before handing the keys over to current Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr. He oversaw decades of resounding success in San Antonio and was instrumental to the careers of Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, David Robinson, Bruce Bowen and Kawhi Leonard, among many others.
This is a very scary situation, so it’s very encouraging to hear that he’s in good spirits.
