If really tall quarterbacks from the Pac-12 get you hot and bothered, Tanner McKee is your man. McKee represents this year’s version of the Brock Osweiler experiment teams talk themselves into year after year. Will McKee break through and prove to be worth the gamble? Let’s discuss it in this 2023 NFL Draft profile!
I remember talking with Scott frequently about McKee during the year. The losers at PFF thought McKee was the best quarterback in the draft for a while. Of course, Stanford fell off a cliff toward the end of the year and that hype train quickly quieted. I say that to say this. Please stop taking PFF seriously. There are still McKee believers out there but most of them who were off the deep end can’t be found anymore.
I talked about this a lot during the combine but McKee’s lower half is a problem. Forget about lacking mobility. I can sort of live with that. McKee seems to have a similar problem to Carson Strong, in my opinion. He almost looks dead in the lower half. Like he’s permanently injured. The Purdue guy is built really similarly but way more active in the lower half.
You can pretend it doesn’t matter but it does. McKee is always going to suffer from accuracy issues because of it. The knees always tell the story. His knee bend is horrific.
I get that Stanford is bad but it’s not like he didn’t have targets either. Michael Wilson and Elijah Higgins are both respectable draft prospects this year. With that in mind, McKee sported a 13-8 TD to INT ratio. The yards per attempt at 6.9 isn’t really good enough either. Especially for college. The accuracy dipped in 2022 registering at 62%. The production just isn’t close to good enough for NFL standard.
The tools are really what you’re looking at here. Has a good arm. Former 4-star recruit. The size is obvious (6-foot-6, 231). This is the new Davis Mills. It’s a matter of how much you believe in it. I have a firm 5th round grade on Tanner McKee for that reason but I’m not sure I’m even willing to go that high.
