Fields: The Bears potentially adding Tee Higgins would be ‘awesome’

This season was one that was all too familiar for Bears fans of late: Low expectations that still somehow don’t get met. After a 2-1 start, many fans thought that a corner was being turned and that this Bears team would be competitive. They then proceeded to lose 13 of their next 14 games and find themselves with the No. 1 overall pick. While this season was a whole lot of bad, Bears fans at least now seemingly have something to look forward to. That being the emergence of Justin Fields.

While the play of Fields is definitely something to get excited about, it’s very clear that he lacks the talent around him to be successful. One position where an upgrade is desperately needed is the wide receiver position. It’s clear that the Chase Claypool move didn’t work out and Fields is very much in need of an elite wideout.

A name that’s being thrown around a lot is current Bengals receiver Tee Higgins. Fields told USA Today Sports’ Mackenzie Salmon that the prospect of potentially adding Higgins is “awesome” and called the former Clemson star a “great receiver.”

The Bengals are due to have to pay both Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase in the coming years. Although I’m sure the Bengals would love to keep that elite receiving core together, I’m not sure they will have the money to do so.

So many people believe that the Bengals will try and ship out Higgins rather than lose him for nothing, and the Bears seem like the perfect spot for the star receiver to land. They are in desperate need of a No. 1 wide receiver and have the capital to make this trade happen.

Higgins just finished another great year in which he brought in 74 catches for 1,029 yards and seven touchdowns. Those numbers may not jump off the page, but you need to remember that he shares his position with Chase and Tyler Boyd, who comprise the best receiving core in the NFL.

But you would be a fool to not think that Higgins could be a WR one for a lot of other teams. And the Bears are one of those teams where that would be the case. He would come in and immediately be the WR Justin Fields needs to take the next step.

We saw Hurts breakout after getting A.J. Brown. Josh Allen became an MVP candidate after getting Stefon Diggs. Burrow himself exploded after getting Chase. It’s a formula that has proven true time and time again and the Bears would be stupid not to follow it.

It’s foolish for the Bears to not go after Higgins, especially when you look at how horribly weak this free agency/draft class is at the position. There really isn’t anybody in either pool that will move the needle enough to make this team much better. DeAndre Hopkins is the only somewhat enticing name. But going into his age-31 season, I don’t know if the Bears are going to want to shell out all that money.

They have more than enough draft capital to bring in Higgins and I think they should. It makes too much sense and could be made easier by the Bengals’ desire to ship him out. This Bears team will still have a lot of work to do, but getting Fields a true lead wideout is the first step into furthering his development.

Still, this is the Bears we are talking about. A franchise that never seems to know what it’s doing or what direction it wasn’t to go. For the first time in a while, the future looks bright for Chicago. I just hope for the fans’ sake ownership doesn’t screw it all up again.
