The second the Amari Cooper trade happened, I just knew this would be one of those moves that came back to bite the Cowboys. We’re three weeks into the 2022 NFL Season and the Cowboys couldn’t miss Amari Cooper more than they do right now.
Dak Prescott is hurt, CeeDee Lamb has underachieved since (something Jerry also talked about), and Cooper has 202 yards and two scores over the last two weeks for a Browns offense led by Jacoby Brissett. Tough scenes.
Jerry Jones had to do what he does best; run his mouth. Trust me, that wasn’t a compliment. Check out what the Cowboys owner had to say about letting Cooper go.
“The issue with Amari Cooper was how much we were paying him and what we could do with that money, completely. Amari Cooper is a real good player. Top player,” Jones said, via Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News
“You can’t have it all,” Jones said.
It’s a nonsense answer by a guy that’s totally lost it. If the Cowboys wanted to, they could have kept Cooper. He would have counted $20 million against their cap for the upcoming season. Dealing the former Alabama product counted $6 million in dead money. Dallas could have easily restructured a contract that they signed if they wanted to.
The bottom line is Jerry Jones is making excuses here. He botched this thing and knows it. Dallas should have bent over backward to keep Cooper and simply restructured the deal.
