Jordan Mason: The Next Shanahan Success Story?

Is Jordan Mason the next running back success story under Kyle Shanahan? Apparently, Mason is so good the 49ers had no choice but to cut Trey Sermon? (Michael Zagaris | Getty Images)

Jordan Mason: The Next Shanahan Success Story?

I’m out on Elijah Mitchell in fantasy. I haven’t done an individual post on it yet but I just genuinely believe you never want to get too high on no-name running backs that Kyle Shanahan creates. You’re better off trying to grab the next guy instead of the incumbent starter. Maybe Jordan Mason is that guy?

It was a bit of a shock when Trey Sermon was cut after San Francisco had just taken him the year prior in the third round. We now know why Sermon was cut. Jordan Mason is just better.

“The bottom line, Mason just played too well, and we felt like he made our team better,” Lynch said, via 49ersWebzone.com. “And the hard part of that equation is, on Trey, it’s been much-chronicled, his readiness last year. Not that he wasn’t ready. He wasn’t ready to play like we felt we needed him to last year. To Trey’s credit, he was challenged, and he answered the bell in every way this year. So, really proud of Trey for that.”

Many might not know who Jordan Mason is but once upon a time I was fairly high on him. I wouldn’t say that Georgia Tech is a football powerhouse but they have gotten the running back position right. Mason split time with Jahmyr Gibbs who has since transferred to Alabama and will be their starting running back this year. Had Mason not shared some of the limelight with Gibbs, we may be talking about a world where he easily gets drafted in the later rounds.

Frankly, I’d bet Mason is better than Tyrion Davis-Price whom San Francisco picked in the third round this year. The only thing is Davis-Price may get the first crack at things given the draft capital the 49ers used to acquire him. Davis-Price is another complicated situation that I’ve talked about previously. It’s just easy to forget that NOBODY is safe in this Shanahan running style.

I’m not saying you should rush to the waiver wire to add Jordan Mason right now but if he’s not on your radar already, you’re doing it wrong.

As for Trey Sermon, he was quickly picked up by the Eagles only further complicating their backfield. I’m not saying Sermon will make it but it’s way too early to totally give up on the former Oklahoma – Ohio State product. He had an interesting skill set entering the draft. Just didn’t have a lengthy resume to prove what he actually was.
