The Hornets “Love” LiAngelo Ball. And Why Shouldn’t They?

The Charlotte Hornets reportedly “love” LiAngelo Ball, according to ESPN’s Jordan Schultz, and why not? The older brother to the franchise’s cornerstone LaMelo Ball played well during the 2021 NBA Summer League and could earn a G-League contract with the team.

LiAngelo Ball opened a lot of eyes in his first game with the Hornets in the Summer League. In only 16 minutes of action, he tallied 16 points while shooting 5-8 from three. The 22-year-old seemingly did everything right. He ran to the wing and corner in transition to set himself up for a shot. He challenged on the glass, snagging two rebounds and saving multiple possessions. He hustled around the court and looked like a guy who was not going to waste the opportunity and wanted to silence the doubters.

I will admit that I was skeptical of Ball joining the Hornets’ Summer League squad. He had yet to get meaningful minutes in organized basketball for more than a year and has a history that those in the basketball world know all too well. After leaving UCLA before his freshman year began, he went to Lithuania and endured a rocky season. He then came back to the United States and played in the Junior Basketball Association founded by his father, LaVar Ball. After a couple of tryouts with NBA teams, he never made the roster for an NBA or G-League squad. But that could all change in Charlotte.

If the reports are true that the Hornets do “love” Ball, then why not give him a shot? There is no harm in giving him a G-League contract and seeing what happens. He is a good shooter from a family that knows how to hoop. His younger brother exceeded expectations to become the cornerstone of the franchise he hopes to play for and this could very well become similar to the Bucks’ Giannis and Thanasis Antetokounmpo family situation. LiAngelo Ball can really play and the Hornets should give him a chance.
