LaMelo Ball Exceeding Expectations

When the Charlotte Hornets drafted LaMelo Ball at 3 last year in the NBA Draft, this writer will be the first one to admit that I did not like the pick. Poor shooting numbers and loss after loss made it seem like a busted pick. But as the year has gone on, Ball has changed the narrative on him. He has grabbed the attention and respect of many in the NBA community, including a vote of confidence from the greatest of all time and his GM Michael Jordan.

“I think Melo has adjusted to the NBA game better than any of us ever thought this early in his career,” the Hornets owner told the Associated Press in an email. “He has exceeded our expectations so far this season.”

LaMelo Ball has come a long way from the start of the season. It’s clear that his strengths are more than capable of covering up his weaknesses. His ability to share the ball with all guys on the floor is something to behold. His court vision is up there with the top guards in the league. Shot selection sometimes leaves much to be desired, but his percentages (38% 3PT, 80% FT) are very encouraging. Will those numbers last throughout the rest of the season? To be determined.

How Does His Future Look?

I will admit it. I was wrong about the pick. Does he have superstardom written all over him as writer Ryan Friend mentioned? I am not sold on it yet. But so far through his rookie campaign, he is looking like he can handle his own at the elite level of the NBA. Right now, I think we are looking at the Rookie of the Year.
