The Chicago Cubs Should Not Sell At The 2021 Trade Deadline
I will say it again. The Chicago Cubs should not sell at the 2021 trade deadline. Sure, the Cubs have already traded away Joc Pederson, but the organization should do their best to keep the roster intact. If we think about it, the championship core that led the Cubs to win the World Series in 2016 (including Javier Baez, Kris Bryant, and Anthony Rizzo) is still there. So why are the Cubs trying to tear everything down and rebuild?
The simple answer is the organization’s belief that they can no longer make deep playoff runs with this roster, but I believe the Cubs have a contending roster right now, not five years down the line. Kris Bryant’s versatility along with the amazing hitting that Patrick Wisdom has provided and the talented position players such as Baez, Rizzo, Wilson Contreras, and Jason Heyward, make the Cubs a solid, deep team.
The Bullpen For The Chicago Cubs Has Been Amazing
But the biggest reason for faith in the Cubs roster is not the hitting, which has been inconsistent at times, but the bullpen. Names like Ryan Tepera, Rex Brothers, and Andrew Chafin led the Cubs to a streak where they only allowed one earned run in 47 consecutive innings, and the entire bullpen is having career seasons. Despite the bullpen cooling off in July, they have proved they can be capable, especially with a few more consistent players added to the rotation.
It appears as though the Cubs are not retooling but instead preparing for a total roster rebuild, despite the existing talent on the roster. Sorry Cubs fans, but a rebuild appears to be on the way and it could be a long time before the Cubs win again.
