The Flames have a Rasmus Andersson problem, and they only have themselves to blame. Largely because general manager Craig Conroy made a rookie mistake and exposed that he doesn’t have any forward-thinking ability.
Flames fans can complain all they want, but the finger-pointing really should start with Conroy. Let’s go back to six months ago. The Swedish defenseman reiterated that he wanted to stay. Calgary didn’t trade him at the deadline. They didn’t extend him either. Instead, the Flames tried to battle for a playoff spot, and Andersson gave the team everything he had… including playing through a broken fibula.
So what did the Flames do after the season? They continued to shop Andersson.
And guess what happened next?
Andersson did what any competitor would do. He took matters into his own hands.
You want to trade me to LA?
Nah.
I’m only extending with Vegas, so you can deal with the aftermath of that.
Don’t put this on the player. Blame the GM for not understanding team building. Does anyone in Calgary know what the Flames are trying to accomplish?
Are they rebuilding?
Are they trying to win?
Nobody knows.
So don’t you dare try to blame Andersson for taking matters into his own hands. This Flames team is run by a guy who really doesn’t know what he’s doing. If the Flames wanted to trade him, they should have done so a year and a half ago. Instead, they sat on their hands and will pay the consequences for it.
