A few years ago, I wrote a post on whether Dynasty was an acceptable form of fantasy football. Today, I’d like to expand on my reasoning. I wouldn’t say I’m changing my answer. Instead, I’m essentially explaining why this format needs to be altered for the better.
Dynasty just feels morally wrong, and I’m going to tell you why…
You see, nobody should be owned forever. The idea that you own a player forever… feels kinda like… do I even need to say it?
The best fantasy leagues replicate real-life football. The market is the market, and I’m just trying to understand why dynasty owners can’t grasp that concept. There needs to be a free agency period. There needs to be a pay the player fair market value concept… even if it’s in fantasy.
Sooo, yeah, let’s finish this conversation.
Cookie-cutter dynasty leagues are for losers. There is a reason why they have become more popular. The dumbest people out there have ruined a concept that has potential. It just needs to be overhauled in a serious way.
If you’re in a dynasty league, here are some ideas on how you can elevate it beyond the normal trash that’s out there.
Introduce contracts into your league. When the contract runs out, the player goes back into the pool to be bid on again.
Franchise tags can be included in this.
Increasing the player’s salary the longer they remain on your roster is another way to do it.
If you’re in a snake draft, this is a much longer conversation to be had. Make them fork over draft picks based on where they picked the player. There’s not much more you can do beyond that, but it’s another example of why you should be in an auction league, to begin with.
