The Green Bay Packers have released running back Aaron Jones after the two-sided failed to restructure his contract, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.
The Packers’ decision to cut Jones came shortly after signing Josh Jacobs. The move will save the Packers approximately five million in cap space while leaving them with $12,348,000 in dead cap, according to Spotrac.
The Packers also cut left tackle David Bakhtiari to open cap space.
Jones spent seven seasons as a Packer after the team selected him in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. In his tenure, he logged 5,940 rushing yards and 45 touchdowns. Additionally, he added 2,076 yards and 18 touchdowns through the air.
In 2023, Jones significantly struggled with injuries. That resulted in missing six games while not being fully healthy when on the field.
The Packers will have a completely new backfield in 2024. With Jones out the door, the team’s top option is gone. Furthermore, AJ Dillon is a free agent and may be out of the picture as well.
At 29 years old, Jones will likely not have a robust free agency market. It does not help that several running backs have already come off the board throughout free agency. That includes the Eagles signing Saquon Barkley, the Titans adding Tony Polland, and the Bears reaching an agreement with D’Andre Swift. That takes three potential landing spots off the board.
Despite his age and injury concerns, Jones could provide a spark out of the backfield. It is difficult to trust him as a lead back, but he can be a strong asset at the right price.
