New York Jets to start Tim Boyle, move Zach Wilson to QB3

It has been a long and bumpy road for New York Jets quarterbacks this season. After another horrific performance from Zach Wilson, the Jets have decided to bench the former No. 2 pick for Friday’s game against the Miami Dolphins, as veteran signal-caller Tim Boyle will get the start.

Zach Wilson has been undoubtedly underwhelming to start his career, and lately, it hasn’t been getting any brighter. In Sunday’s match against the Buffalo Bills, Wilson went 7-for-15 for 81 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He would be benched for Boyle in the third quarter.

Boyle has been a perennial backup his entire career. He’s only made three starts in five seasons; in those three starts, Boyle’s 0-3 with three touchdowns and six interceptions on 94 attempts. Jets head coach Robert Salah had this to say about the QB situation this upcoming situation.

“We just want to give him an opportunity,” Saleh said Monday. “He a different style of quarterback. It’s really to give him an opportunity to see if we can do something with the offense.

“We’re 4-6, a little behind the eight ball, but not out it [of the playoff race],” he added. “We had a three-game losing streak before we bounced back, The NFL is a roller coaster, right? I think our group has a lot of confidence.

We’re young on offense, we’ve gotten young quickly. On defense, we’re just continuing to play to the standard we need to play. The overarching message is that you have to have fun to go out there. Embrace being an NFL player, fulfilling our dreams when we were little. There’s still a lot of juice and excitement.”

Maybe this could be a shining light in the dark for the Jets as tight end Tyler Conklin seemed to be supportive of the veteran QB taking over.

“The main thing that stuck out was his confidence in the huddle,” Conklin said. “He came in, commanded the huddle and was really decisive getting the ball out of his hands. He got it out quick and stuck it out. In a small sample I’d say he has confidence about him, he knows the offense.”

Heading into just his fourth start in his five-year NFL career, the 29-year-old Boyle seems positive heading into the matchup against a star-studded Miami Dolphins squad.

“It’s really just positivity,” he said. “I think that football is that interesting momentum game where words on the sideline, or words in the huddle, it’s not going to cultivate much. It’s really just about playing together and making sure that communication is strong and there’s no heroic efforts out there. Just making sure we run the offense and I think Coach [Nathaniel] Hackett did a good job making sure we had a good game plan going this week. We just didn’t execute it.”

The Jets are traveling back home for their matchup this Friday at 2:00 pm to face off against the 7-3 Miami Dolphins.
