Joe Namath calls out Zach Wilson: ‘I’ve seen enough’
After losing Aaron Rodgers only four plays into his New York Jets debut, the entire organization looked to just one guy to fill his shoes for now: Zach Wilson.
Well, they might have to look another way now after Wilson’s poor play. Legendary Jets quarterback Joe Namath has now called out Wilson and claimed he has seen enough of him.
This past offseason, the New York Jets brought in future Hall-of-Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers to solve their problem behind center. It seemed like everything was solved for New York. Their team would get a much-needed upgrade at QB over Wilson and could finally contend for a Super Bowl in a tough AFC conference.
But everything has crumbled apart, especially Wilson.
Wilson showed some glimpses of hope to Jets fans in the preseason. Even Rodgers was impressed with the former No. 2 overall pick. But Wilson’s poor play from last year has finally caught up to him, and the Jets’ only Super Bowl champion QB, Joe Namath, has called him out.
“I didn’t take anything positive out of it. It was awful,” Namath said about Wilson’s performance, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini. “I wouldn’t keep him. I’ve seen enough of Zach Wilson.”
The Jets took Wilson in the 2021 NFL draft after an impressive career at BYU. NFL fans’ mouths watered over Wilson’s pro day with BYU, slinging 60-70-yard throws on the money to his BYU wideouts. The uncovered deep post routes flew Wilson up draft boards and landed him No. 2 overall behind former Clemson signal-caller Trevor Lawrence.
Wilson’s early career has given every NFL scout a lesson–never trust a QB’s play based on one good pro day.
So far, Wilson has gotten off to an even worse start than his first two seasons. He’s thrown for only two touchdowns with four interceptions in three games. If the Jets want to get something out of this season, they need to find a replacement fast.
