Everton Deducted 10 Points, Falls Back Into Relegation Fight
Just as it looked like Everton had turned a new leaf, they are now right back in the relegation fight. The Premier League announced Friday that an independent commission had deducted 10 points from the Merseyside club due to a breach of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSRs).
The Premier League said that it issued a complaint against Everton earlier this year and referred the case to an independent commission.
“During the proceedings, the club admitted it was in breach of the PSRs for the period ending season 2021-22 but the extent of the breach remained in dispute,” the Premier League said via statement. “The Commission determined that Everton FC’s PSR Calculation for the relevant period resulted in a loss of £124.5 million ($154.7m), as contended by the Premier League, which exceeded the threshold of £105m permitted under the PSRs.”
Everton has incurred five straight years of losses, with the total over those five years now reaching a sum of £430 million. However, the club claims that they have made significant reductions to their losses in the last few years, down £76m from last year’s loss of £121m. Due to this, Everton has claimed that the deduction is unjust and has announced its intention to appeal the decision.
“Everton maintains that it has been open and transparent in the information it has provided to the Premier League and that it has always respected the integrity of the process,” a club statement said. “The club does not recognize the finding that it failed to act with the utmost good faith and it does not understand this to have been an allegation made by the Premier League during the course of proceedings. Both the harshness and severity of the sanction imposed by the Commission are neither a fair nor a reasonable reflection of the evidence submitted.”
The point deduction comes just as Everton has refound its footing in the Premier League. After a horrific start to the season that had Sean Dyche’s side looking like relegation fodder yet again, the Toffees began to turn things around with the return of Dominic Calvert-Lewin to the side.
Everton had picked up 10 points from its last five games, catapulting the club all the way up to 14th place, well out of the relegation picture. However, this point deduction has now sunk Everton back to 19th place with only four points. Only Burnley sits lower than Everton now, and that is thanks to goal difference.
