Samaje Perine Poised For Large Role With Broncos?
It sure sounds like the Denver Broncos are going to try to make Samaje Perine a thing during the 2023-24 NFL Season. What kind of role will the former Oklahoma product have in his first season under Sean Payton in Denver? Reports indicate that Perine could have a very large role.
Dan Graziano of Espn.com (don’t click the link it’s behind a paywall) has reported that Perine could even be the lead back for a large chunk of the upcoming season. Javonte Williams, of course, is coming off a pretty significant knee injury that was suffered during the early portions of last season. Easing Williams into the season makes all the sense in the world.
At the same token, I’m not sure I’m really buying the Perine hype. In fact, I’m challenging Matthew Berry on his Perine take. I get the idea that Perine will be involved but I don’t see how he’s going to finish the season as a top 35 play at the position. Mostly because the guy just isn’t that talented.
Perine, 28, has never had more than three rushing touchdowns in a season. He hasn’t rushed for over 400 yards since his rookie year back in 2017. In what world is Perine going to be this fantasy darling? Especially while splitting time with Williams and playing for a Broncos team that isn’t that good. I just don’t see it.
Perine might get some volume in Denver but I have a hard time believing this out-of-nowhere fantasy breakout season is on the horizon. Feel free to hit the comments if you disagree. I just don’t really see the argument in favor of taking Perine high in drafts.
