Brian Cashman: Yankees Are ‘In It To Win It’

Brian Cashman is losing credibility and respect day by day. The New York Yankees head of baseball operations pulled off one of the most boring trade deadlines in recent memory. All he could muster for his last-place team is a pair of middling bullpen arms.

However, what’s the point of adding to a bullpen when he’s got an offense that can’t even create a lead to protect? To say the rails have fallen off the tracks in the Bronx is a true understatement. However, for some sad reason, Cashman thinks the Yankees are still in the mix of contending. Check out his full remarks below:

Did you see the look on his face when he was talking? Yes, Nestor Cortes was an All-Star last season and Jonathan Loaisiga is one of the Yanks’ most consistent relievers when healthy. Regardless, using that as an excuse not to add a single outfield player is simply hilarious. Cashman completely neglected the duties of his job by doing that.

Could there maybe exist a method behind the madness in all of this? Reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge made his return from injury on Friday. In classic Judge fashion, he pounded a home run in his second game back. However, not even the American League home run leader in a season appears to be enough to save this Yankees offense.

Babies, Not Bombers

2023 has seen widespread regression from the likes of Giancarlo Stanton, Anthony Rizzo and DJ LeMahieu among many others. Those three were supposed to be the core of Judge’s supporting cast. Instead, they all disappeared once 99 went down injured in June.

Elsewhere, one of New York’s worst problems is left-handed hitting. They are near the bottom in all the majors for lefty plate appearances against righty pitchers. Of course, the switch-hitting Dylan Carlson was there for the taking in the Cardinals firesale. The Yanks watched the division-leading Orioles swoop in for Jack Flaherty.

Cashman was even flirting with Carlson for weeks. He would’ve been an OK buy-low option that at least provides a stopgap in left field. However, crickets instead. Yet we’re supposed to believe the Yankees are in it to win it. Can someone make it make sense?

The craziest thing about all of this is that everyone has known the Yankees’ offense is average–at best–without Judge. Instead of addressing it last winter, Cashman picked up Carlos Rodon, a pitcher who is now dangerously close to being labeled a complete bust (as Trey knew months ago). Brian Cashman can simply no longer keep up in today’s MLB. He was fine when The Boss was still around and gave him a blank check to invest. Hal, meanwhile, cares more about tickets and jersey sales than winning.

Cashman’s incompetence and Steinbrenner’s penny-pinching means the Evil Empire of the Bronx is long gone. In its place is a multifaceted problem that will likely afflict the New York Yankees for a long time, and the above quote is the perfect epitome of everything wrong with the winningest franchise in American sports.
