When Russell Wilson coined the phrase “Broncos Country, let’s ride,” he had every Denver Broncos fan believing the team was going back to the Super Bowl. However, Wilson was uncharacteristically awful in 2022.
Denver went 4-11 in the 15 games Wilson started last year. The quarterback completed a career-low 60.5 percent of his passes for 3,524 yards with 16 touchdowns, also a career-low, and 11 interceptions. And even though Wilson missed two games, he still led the league in taking 55 sacks.
Wilson rushing totals have also dipped over the past two years. In 2021 and 2022, Wilson combined for 460 total yards on the ground, 53 yards less than his 2020 season.
The Broncos desperately need a bounce-back year from their starter, and All-Pro safety Justin Simmons is confident that’ll happen.
In a recent interview with SiriusXM NFL Radio, Simmons noted the lengths Wilson has gone to in the offseason in order to improve in 2023.
“I know he’s one of the hardest workers, if not the hardest worker, I’ve ever been around and that I’ve seen, and his attention to detail and his preparation has already made me a better player, being his teammate,” Simmons said, via Pro Football Talk. “And so, I’m always going to put my full trust and confidence in him as my quarterback, and I can’t wait to see what that looks like heading into Year Two with us.”
The addition of Sean Payton as the team’s new head coach will certainly boost the offensive play calling, so it’ll be fun to see if the Broncos can reach the postseason for the first time since 2015.
