The Denver Broncos head into this offseason with some optimism. Drew Lock showed flashes that he can be a franchise quarterback. Denver won 4 of its last 5 games and could wind up being a sneaky team this season. Heading into the 2020 NFL Draft, Denver has a shot to really make a splash and become a playoff team. Let’s head inside the Broncos 2020 NFL Draft War Room to see what John Elway has planned.
The Broncos hold the 15th pick in the first round. The great news is that they hold 10 picks in this draft. Denver collected two in the Emmanuel Sanders trade and an extra Steelers pick when they traded up for Devin Bush. The Broncos have 5 picks in the top 100 to do some serious damage. Their top picks currently sit at 15, 46, 77, 83, and 95. Those are the picks I will focus on for the post.
Denver has two options in the first round. I don’t usually just curse for no reason but I feel the need to because the next thing I’m about to say can’t be said any other way. Garett Bolles fucking sucks. I have a challenge for you. Go watch a Broncos game and do nothing except watch number 72. He will literally make your eyes bleed. My combine prediction of him came true. Mark Schlereth also has a really good rant about him. 72 on the Broncos can’t play.
The left tackle position has to be addressed. Luckily, it’s a good tackle draft. There are 4 big time tackle prospects. Mekhi Becton, Jedrick Wills, Tristan Wirfs, and Andrew Thomas. Personally, I’m an Andrew Thomas proponent. In this instance, it literally doesn’t matter. Take any of them and they immediately upgrade one of the worst starters in the NFL. It could swing the Draft for Denver.
The other possibility is they go wide receiver. Courtland Sutton is terrific don’t get that twisted. However, that’s all Denver has. DaeSean Hamilton is fine but that’s not good enough to be the only other guy. Imagine what CeeDee Lamb could do for this offense? What if the Broncos land Jerry Jeudy? Maybe take a shot on Henry Ruggs III. Drew Lock has the arm and Ruggs’ speed in that altitude plays.
My point is with this whole thing is that Denver can be patient. Let the draft come to them. 15 might feel like you’re on the outskirts but there’s a good chance a stud falls in your lap. Let it happen.
At some point, the Broncos have to address corner. There is a weird spot in the draft where good corners should be available in that 2nd round range. One player I should have mentioned on more occasions is Trevon Diggs. The Alabama corner is the brother of Stefon Diggs. Not sure if you have heard of him but… yeah he’s good. Denver lost Chris Harris this offseason. They did replace him with AJ Bouye but there’s still a downgrade there. The Broncos really have never replaced Bradley Roby either. Bring in Diggs to man the other cornerback spot.
The post is getting long so I’ll do some rapid fire for the third round picks. Justin Simmons is a beast. Right now Kareem Jackson is the other safety who is aging rapidly. Ashtyn Davis of Cal could be an option there.
Why not double up at the receiver position? I still think Denver should try to draft a deep threat. Devin Duvernay could be a potential target. Might be a reach for the third round so he’s more of a later round pick. Still, the Denver offense could benefit from this skillset.
Denver lost Derrick Wolfe this offseason. The Broncos need a big body to fill that defensive line. Someone who fits the 3-4 scheme. Enter McTelvin Agim who is a big nose tackle who can swallow the middle. Aren’t they tired of throwing Kyle Peko out there?
