USC Didn’t Hire Ed Orgeron Because They Didn’t Like His Voice

Geaux Tigas! Ed Orgeron and the LSU Tigers are tearing up college football. They look like a menace that cannot be stopped. LSU can’t miss right now. What if I told you this run almost didn’t happen. Hell of a 30 for 30 promo right there. Ed Orgeron almost got the USC job except for the part where they didn’t like his voice. Couldn’t make it up if I tried.

Bruce Feldman went on the Rich Eisen show and came out with this nugget:

“I think what you have is a guy who has continued to evolve,” Feldman said. “He made a huge jump from when he was at Ole Miss to when he was at USC. I think he’s made a significant jump after that, but I really think it’s a USC issue. You have a lot of people at USC, especially during the Pat Haden regime, who couldn’t get past what Ed Orgeron sounded like. They didn’t listen to the players. They didn’t listen to the staff. At the end of the day, Ed Orgeron is not a country club guy. I think he can relate to just about anyone. The Governor of Louisiana was waiting outside the locker room. He’s very street smart, and I think that’s one of the things that made him a very good recruiter. He can read people very well. I don’t think Pat Haden, who was the decision maker at the time, that’s just not the type of guy he wanted. I don’t think he could get past it.”

Jesus. Now I’ll be the first to admit, I never thought LSU would be THIS good with Ed Orgeron. It’s not terribly shocking because he is known as one of the best recruiters in the sport. Orgeron is a tough coach and the players love him. Is he a great X’s and O’s kind of guy? That remains to be seen but he’s been a great CEO with the program.

What Is Wrong With USC Football?

There is no question that Coach O would have been an upgrade over Clay Helton. A dead goldfish would be an upgrade over Helton. USC is getting killed in recruiting right now. Their fans aren’t showing up to the games. USC is getting bodied by Washington, Oregon, and Utah in its own conference. Something that should never happen at USC. It’s not going to turn around either until they fire Helton because he doesn’t have a clue what he’s doing.
