With the news breaking today that star receiver for the San Francisco 49ers Deebo Samuel has requested a trade, it got me thinking. Samuel is an elite receiver in the league and a true multi-tool weapon who would likely command a handsome haul of picks/players in return for a trade. My brain immediately started kicking into overdrive about some teams who have a need at receiver, and I have a list of 5 teams who should be calling John Lynch today about Samuel.
*This list is in no particular order*
When the Packers decided to trade Devante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders, it left a MASSIVE hole in this offense for a team that was a made field goal by said 49ers away from reaching the NFC Championship. While it would be sweet irony that Green Bay trade with the team that broke their hearts last season, a move for Deebo Samuel would slingshot the Packers right back to the top of the NFC. The 49ers’ first pick in the draft comes at 61 overall, and since the Packers pick at 22 and 28, a trade probably brings the 49ers one if not both of those picks plus more.
We go back to teams that traded star receivers this off-season, we come to the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs parted ways with Tyreek Hill this off-season. This move left quarterback Patrick Mahomes shocked, but imagine his reaction when he hears a trade for Deebo Samuel. Yes, their playstyles are different, but Samuel in this offense brings a whole other dynamic than they had in years past, which is a terrifying thing. The AFC West is loaded, and a move of this caliber re-establishes the Chiefs as the kings of the division. Kansas City also has two first-round picks, 29 and 30, so you can imagine both of those go to San Francisco.
The New York Jets, for as long as I can remember, have not really had a young true number one receiver. Jets fans might mention Laveraneus Coles or Wayne Cherbet but come on, those guys are nothing compared to Samuel. The Jets were rumored to be in the final two for Tyreek Hill, which means they are going out and looking for that elite receiver for Zach Wilson. If the Jets think they have a puncher’s chance this season, expect them to be making some phone calls. Picking at 4 and 10 in the first round, the 49ers would be foolish to not listen to trade offers from the Jets.
You could argue that maybe it’s time to cut ties with Bill Belichick, maybe he isn’t in touch as much as he used to be. This Patriots team did finish 10-7 last season and a wild card berth, and there is a clear need for a true number one receiver for young quarterback Mac Jones. I think that Belichick might have PTSD from the N’Keal Harry pick, but adding a guy like Samuel to this offense would spell trouble for those AFC East defenses. Samuel showed great rushing ability last season, and in an offense that can be run-heavy, I think the transition could be seamless. Look what John Harbaugh did with Lamar Jackson in terms of changing an offense completely for a player. If they could do that with Samuel, it’s a game-changer.
This might be considered an “out there” pick for a team that should call for Deebo Samuel, but it’s no secret that the Colts need help at receiver. Outside of Michael Pittman Jr., there isn’t a lot to love about their receivers group. This team is showing they are all in after trading for Matt Ryan, why not give him an elite receiver to pair on this offense. This team has a great offensive line, an elite running back in Jonathan Taylor, imagine adding Samuel to this roster? The Colts do not own a first-round pick this season, so for the Colts to make a move, it might have to include a player and picks for next year.
Honorable Mention: Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles, Tennessee Titans
