2025 East-West Shrine Bowl Practice: Day Three East Team

Sorry, not sorry, but I have to do another quick story time before we get started today. We’ll get to the 2025 East-West Shrine Bowl practice notes from day three on the East team in a second. Although, I feel obligated to remind you that we have the behind-the-scenes film this year so more in-depth coverage will come a couple of weeks down the line. This post you’re reading right now are the flash takeaways I see from the live stream.

Which brings us to our story today.

Hi,

Trey here.

No big deal but it’s America’s favorite pastime of Trey changing the sports world for the better and getting no credit for it. I’m sure I will get credit for it. I also don’t really care about the credit. I sleep great at night either way knowing I’m accomplishing the mission my soul has been sent here to do and that’s to make the sports landscape a better place.

If you have been following along, you know what’s going on. Here’s the link for that, in case you missed it.

If you’re already caught up, get ready for the most cheese Trey story ever.

Turns out that maybe Trey was onto something. Mark Clayton and Eric Warfield were the broadcasters on the first two days of practice. It’s beating a dead horse to keep going over how bad they were. If you watched it, you know how bad it was.

Credit to Shawne Merriman because he did what he had to do to put a better product out there. In reality, he really didn’t have a choice. At the end of the day, this is about the players on the field. I don’t know how the coaches, family members, or whatever weren’t furious because the Clayton and Warfield duo weren’t actually educating the audience on any of the players on the screen to help build their hype heading into the draft. They were too busy jerking each other off about the good ole days when they were a player. Thank goodness Bill Simmons wasn’t there. He would have stuck a finger up their ass as long as he got 10 more minutes to get down and dirty with the NBA trade machine.

Maybe you think what I said right there crosses a line. Maybe it did. That’s up to the Chinese Farmer to determine the answer to that. All I know is what I said right there is the crux of the problem with the media. The people who are devoted and tell you what you want to hear. They constantly get pushed up the ladder. The people who tell you the truth and who are truly loyal… they get pushed aside.

Trust me, I’m fully aware of how it works. I got fired by the Phillies for recommending they go sign Zack Wheeler. You would think they would at least send me a gift basket for helping execute one of the greatest free-agent deals in the history of modern baseball but that’s a story for another day.

Maybe I’d be better off by being a liar like everybody else but I just can’t operate like that. I’ve never accomplished anything in my life by being anyone other than myself so I’ve just leaned into who I am. I think the world needs more of Trey and fewer liars like everybody else.

I’m here to tell the truth. The truth is what you seek, isn’t it? It’s why you the viewer doesn’t ever know who to trust in the media. It’s why more and more of you are tuning out ESPN and mainstream media as a whole. Those layoffs aren’t an accident. I just ask that instead of giving ESPN what they want, instead, you choose to ignore ignorant losers like this instead of giving them the attention they seek.

The way this industry operates is a joke. Nobody wants to tell the truth and the devoted people who lie are the ones who are promoted.

Dare to show me an example of why I’m wrong because I have plenty.

I showed you one during the Matthew Berry challenge. I’d love to know what kind of salary Connor Rogers gets from NBC Sports to tell Matthew Berry “I like it” and “In fairness to Matthew” when Berry says that Ben Sinnott will outscore Brock Bowers. That actually happened and nobody is talking about it.

What about Mike Re-Re… I mean Renner who put Emory Jones (who was never even drafted) in the first round of his mock draft and got a pay raise to go to CBS Sports so that he could cross his legs like a fruitcake.

Sorry, not sorry, but real men cannot do this. I physically can’t do this. I’m pretty positive one of my balls would explode if I tried to do this. I can do a one-armed pull-up. Not a chicken dick’s chance in hell I can cross my legs like this. Credit to fruitcake Mike Re-Re for winning at least one of those categories. Maybe if he crosses his legs harder it will send a signal to his brain to take some accountability on listing Justin Jefferson WR8 during his draft year but I wouldn’t count on that happening. Maybe he will call up Solak so that they can drink some tea at Uncle Bill Simmons’ house with a nightcap that includes the NBA trade machine and undisclosed naughty time. But only the Chinese Farmer has the answer to that.

This is the bottom line. Trey is going to tell you the truth. Trey is going to tell you what you NEED to hear, not what you want to hear. The passing out cupcakes method doesn’t work. Notice how the Patriots went from Belichick, went the Dairy Queen route with Jerod Mayo, and immediately said “yeah, we screwed up” It’s Vrabel time.

The FBI doesn’t use the phonebook to find serial killers. They have a profile and criteria for what they’re looking for and eliminate based on that. It’s why I’m far more accurate than the rest of the industry. I have a criteria and I know exactly what I’m looking for. Knee bend matters. It is what it is.

If you want someone to lie to you, go read somebody else. They’re all the same with the exact same opinion. They’re too afraid to stray from the pact because politics runs the NFL Draft, not intelligence. It’s what happened with con job Jonathon Brooks.

That was until today. I’m a firm believer that we as humans can accomplish many things with proper leadership. If I have to be the bad guy so that I can be the good guy later, I have no problem with doing so.

Zach Wolchuk and Voch Lombardi were on the call today and they did a fantastic job on very short notice. They were incredibly prepared and made my life way easier in terms of jotting down notes.

Again, I have no idea if I was truly the one who changed the broadcast today… but I also doubt it’s a coincidence.

I also think Zach and Voch owe me a drink for getting them this paycheck and whatever networking opportunities they made while there at the event but that part of our journey probably hasn’t been written yet. Whomst knows, maybe down the line Voch realizes he can do better than working for dummy Cowturd but we can talk about that another time.

Anywho… cheers and I’m very much looking forward to the future interview with Shawne Merriman. Credit to him because he made the necessary change and I think everyone on the Lights Out TV staff would acknowledge to him that the product was SIGNIFICANTLY better today.

If a future consigliere role is on the table in terms of organizing this event for Lights Out is on the table, I hypothetically probably wouldn’t say no. Since we’re in the mood to take suggestions from Trey, the next move is to be a pitbull with the schedule makers to make sure the Senior Bowl doesn’t overlap with this event (which will be the case tomorrow taking many eyeballs away from this set of practices). If Fox Sports can take away Penn State white out games and make mandatory Ohio State noon kick-offs every single week, surely someone with the pedigree of Shawne Merriman can move the needle enough to get this change made. After all, he is paying for the TV rights and I sure would be pissed if another NFL Draft event was overlapping and running at the same time. Let’s call that my resume for the consigliere role.

I’ve gone on long enough. Here are the notes. Storytime over.

Quarterbacks:

No reason to beat a dead horse. This group is a matter of if you like Kyle McCord or not. They had him mic’d up today. His one throw during team drill where he hits Gadsen layered over the defender near the sideline. Really good stuff. I use the he can play term a lot but it applies here. Ohio State made this guy into a scapegoat for no reason and it was wrong. Has real arm talent. Not a burner running wise but he’s not a statue. Can move and make throws while on the move. He’s driving the ball off the back foot. He can throw serious darts. Aware in the arm angle department.

Running Backs:

Eye level on Arizona is really bad. Can’t get through the bags without tripping on himself.

Raheim Sanders for a big back. He just has it. Has some burner qualities too. He has juice. Had a stupid good cut where Pegues almost murdered him in team setting and then he takes off and goes. Has a gear to him. Really nice sudden cuts. Not perfect in the hands department.

I don’t see Montrell Johnson here. Maybe he quit. I can’t confirm that but based on how he looked day one, choosing a different career path is probably a wise choice. It was Arizona and South Carolina rotating reps. No more third back in the group. If Johnson quit to go chase his dreams of being a golf instructor.. good for him.

Wide Receivers:

Catch the ball, Dominic Lovett. Georgia led FBS in drops during the season and he was part of the problem. Not a natural hands catcher. He can get open. Slot guy only.

Jackson Meeks can run. Didn’t see any issues with the hands.

KeAndre Lambert-Smith is a dude. Can really make catches. Can use his size. Gets open. Can bend. Did you know he’s related to Kam Chancellor? I actually didn’t know that but it goes to show how much better the broadcast team did today compared to the first two days.

Nick Nash looks like Mack Hollins. Take that as you will. No separation but has height and can make the contested catch. Just had more moments where he can’t finish the catch.

Ja’Corey Brooks is a former Bama guy. Can see he’s not an elite mover but he doesn’t suck.

Movement skills on Neyor sure look passable.

Eastern Washington guy looks like homeless Kupp but he’s won some battles.

Tight End:

Joshua Simon made an insane catch to high-point it. Great job. Holy hell this was awesome.

Movement skills from Oronde Gadsen are just different from this group. He’s got serious untapped potential. I think I’m buying into this more and more. He might really be something. It’s a matter of do I put him into the Elijah Arroyo I’m going to slam the table for as a development tight end button.

Rivaldo Fairweather has some of that stuff too. He’s just not quite as polished.

Offensive Line:

Oregon State’s Gerad Christian-Lichtenhan can play. Stonewalled Syracuse to start one on ones. Needs to cover more ground with his feet but he’s hanging in there. He’s big though. Pancakes West Virginia on a different rep. Needs to bend better. Doesn’t have elite power either. But he’s fighting and winning reps.

Washington State’s Esa Pole has something to him. Beat Tyler Baron in a rep. Had a rep against Walker where he’s totally in control and not panicked by that first step. Smooth in his technique too. Been consistent the whole time.

75 Penn State’s Sal Wormley a new add. Took me a bit to figure out who it was. Thought he had a bunch of really good reps. He’s about the only guy who didn’t get killed by Pegues.

Middlebury? Stuffing Brinson? That was something. Voch made a great point during the broadcast. Put him back at center. Looked better there. Don’t know anything about Thomas Perry. You’re lying if you watched Middlebury but this is exactly why we do this. So that you can go back and do so.

A lot of bad snaps from the centers in team stuff. Don’t want to go in overkill mode cause it’s practice but just making a note of it. Although, I think it’s safe to say Wisconsin’s Joe Huber is not the next coming of Travis Frederick.

Defensive Line:

West Virginia’s Sean Martin is not good. Slow footed. Slow in everything he does. Can’t move Kansas a lick in the one on ones. He’s completely awful. Cross off list.

Georgia Tech’s Zeek Biggers not much ahead of him in terms of slowness. Tight hipped.

South Carolina eyes up during the bag drills. Not an elite bender but can do it. Tonka has moves. Kicked Kansas ass. Definitely not weak. Tonka was working that booty and really won his battles hand fighting. Keep those feet moving young blood!

Nebraska is overachiever. Got some power but zero twitch. Has no second pitch beyond power.

JJ Pegues just even going through bag drills everything is easy for him compared to the group. I’ll tell you this. I bet you he runs fast too. You can argue he’s the best guy here. Has real power too. He carries this D Line group.

Not sure how good Warren Brinson is but he’s Georgia good. Can move his feet and pull off some spins. Might be lower end Georgia but he’s not a bad athlete.

Johnny Walker is the best bender here. His balance might be a tick off but athleticism is there. Has leverage. Dip is really good.

Stackhouse can play and he’s not a slug on his size. Put him on the nose and let him work. Dude is a load.

Syracuse has some bend on him.

Virginia Tech’s Antwane Powell-Ryland has third down situational pass rusher written all over him. Has the necessary knee bend. Crafty rusher. He’s not a power guy. Slows down if his bag of tricks doesn’t work. No shot he’s an every down 4-3 end.

Linebackers:

Chris Paul doesn’t look lost in coverage. Beat Gadsen in a route. Beat Rocket Sanders in another route. Nice showing for him who has concerns about size.

How about this pick by Jamon Dumas-Johnson? I’m telling you this guy is good. Former Georgia guy who only left there because they have ridiculous linebacker depth. If he can cover like this… holy hell. Had another play later in team drill where he comes downhill like a demon on what would have been a sack.

Cornerbacks:

Alijah Clark broke up a pass from Kyle McCord in team drills. Was it a matter of knowing tendencies from McCord?
