2023 Reese’s Senior Bowl: National Team Day 3 Practice Notes
It’s the final day of practice here at the 2023 Reese’s Senior Bowl. Garrett and Marc and still on the sidelines at the actual event and will continue to be used as a resource. The ESPN broadcast is awful so we’re doing the best we can until Jim Nagy stops running like a scaredy cat. I wouldn’t even say it was my best work but we’re doing what we can here.
Without further ado, let’s get the notes for today on the National team side!
Quarterbacks:
This might sound like pumpkin spice late analysis but doesn’t Malik Cunningham look like a Lamar Jackson back up type of guy? Wasn’t much to see outside of some completed checkdowns. I think that might be all he has outside of being able to run. Anything down the field looked ugly. Team drills he was so ready to get out and run. Couple of balls where it was intentional grounding without any pass rush. He was that off.
Jaren Hall has nothing period. Never makes a decision in team drills. It was either a screen pass or getting sacked. No instincts to get the ball out ever.
I’m not saying Jake Haener is a world beater but he’s just the best option here. He’s the only guy that can throw the ball and give his guys a chance.
Running Backs:
Can’t imagine Evan Hull is going to run fast. It’s something we’ve been over already yesterday. I just don’t get this hype here. What’s the ceiling? 3rd back on a depth chart?
Garrett from the sidelines says Chase Brown is tanking his draft stock. From the couch watching on TV I couldn’t agree more. He looks totally awful. Brick hands. Can’t catch in walkthroughs. Fumbling left and right. He looks so bad that I’m not sure I’d take him in the 7th round. Legitimately might be the worst player on the field. Supposed to be strong but getting killed in pass pro. He actually looks like he’s being paid to suck. That’s how bad.
Camerun Peoples looks like the best back of the group. Still narrow and upright but he’s catching and trying to fight for yardage. It’s about all I got.
Wide Receivers:
Trey Palmer looks stiff in and out of breaks. You can just see why he was a tier below and didn’t make LSU’s team. I do think there might be something here though. Sprawled out of a nice grab in team drills.
Ronnie Bell stuck in quicksand and his hands continue to be overstated. He might be kinda fast straight line but damn slow from a quickness standpoint.
Grant Dubose from Charlotte caught a nice fade from Jaren Hall. Not sure what it means. Haven’t seen much else from him.
Tight Ends:
Don’t have much on the tight end group. Payne Durham looks like the best of the group with Clemson right behind him. Purdue has some giddy up. Can high point too. Caught a nice touchdown basically being double covered. Then another seam route in team drills.
Offensive Line:
This sucks ^. Enter sad face here.
Olusegun Oluwatimi is awesome. How does everyone else not love this guy? I’m so confident in this one.
I’m a Cody Mauch believer. Small school guy that will thrive at guard. We’ve seen it before and there’s no reason why Mauch won’t be the next. Good athlete too that should be able to do all the necessary pulls.
How we feeling about this Jaelyn Duncan? Was disappointing I thought yesterday so this is a big day for him. The run drills I thought he did well. Team drills he absolutely won the battle against Keion White. He’s playing first team line with Mauch and Michigan alongside him.
North Carolina guy Asim Richards was up and down. Played guard and tackle. Lost to White but beat up Carter in those pass rushing drills. Probably is a guard so the fact that he was winning reps at tackle is a great sign.
Defensive Line:
Andre Carter looks terrible. Outside of being long I have no idea what he has going for him.
Jerrod Clark looks like a fat turd. Has nothing going for him.
I may have been harsh towards Adetomiwa Adebawore. His motor is good. Guy is really trying. He’s not a total bum. The pure athletic traits are overstated and maybe looks like a mid round guy to me.
Linebackers:
Ivan Pace has a stud according to Garrett from the stands. Won a lot in the one on ones. He’s someone I’ve been in on.
Cornerbacks:
Really nice pass break up for Kaevon Merriweather against the Purdue tight end. Maybe a bit grabby but
Jakorian Bennett is still holding people. He may as well be called for a flag on every play.
Higgins from Stanford is for sure a big body. Kinda looks like an undersized tight end. He’s thriving in the red area.
Wilson from Standford is actually impressing. What if his quarterback play was just so bad in school? Has some wiggle. Moves well. Had a drop but adjusts well to the ball in the air.
I’m just going to say that I like Riley Moss. I’m telling you he can run. I didn’t see much else in practice to prove that but I’m just making a note of it for you. The recovery speed will be there. Like the foot. Real loose hips. Knows where to be. Not small either.
Safeties:
Daniel Scott looks really bad in coverage drills. I hope he’s a strong safety cause he can’t cover. Later there was a play in team drills and Ronnie Bell blew right by him for an easy score.
Sydney Brown is the bread winner of the Brown family. He’s been the total opposite of his brother. Check this out. He’s making a ton of plays on the ball. Way more than a box safety. Another pass deflection in team drills.
