2022 Reese’s Senior Bowl: National Team Day 2 Practice Notes

Here. We. Go. The 2022 Reese’s Senior Bowl kicks off with the second day of practices. Of course, I wasn’t able to watch the first day for a reason I’ve gone over several times. Let’s not waste any time. Let’s go over the practice notes for the National Team on day 2 of the 2022 Reese’s Senior Bowl.

*The production quality by ESPN was horrendous. Needs to be said. We’re doing the best we can here.

Quarterbacks:

One thing that needs to be mentioned, it was a bad weather day. Wind and rain definitely played a factor but that’s not a bad thing. We really get to see how these quarterbacks operate in less than ideal conditions. I guess that goes for every position.

Kenny Pickett makes the best throws here. Just has a smoothness and feel the others don’t. Far from perfect. Fumbled a snap again. Made a bad throw in the red area that was almost picked by the Baylor guy. The best throws of the day all go to Pickett. Put this ball on the money only where Trey McBride could go get it.

Carson Strong. Man ball jumps out of his hand. I am scared that something is missing. I’m getting bad Brock Osweiler vibes and I hope I’m wrong cause I think there is hope here. The mobility looks bad. Has a great ball but it kinda dies late. Not a ton of jump in the lower half. Couple high throws. I just want to see some twitch. I do not. Why isn’t he letting it rip? Hard to classify it as anything other than a bad day.

Strong did have the play of the day with a bomb to Christian Watson over Coby Bryant.

It should be said that I’m not a Desmond Ridder guy. He looks worse than I even thought. Doesn’t even deserve to be here. Can’t make a throw. Only positive he does is bail and run. They boot him on everything because he can’t make real throws. Throwing easy throws right into the dirt.

Running Backs:

I just have no interest in this Missouri running back. Tyler Badie. Too small. No Thanks.

Abram Smith just blows. Kam was totally right. Guy stinks. Zero burst. No twitch. Can’t make a simple cut. Looks exactly what he is. A former linebacker who’s got one pitch. I’ll pass. You should too.

This Arizona State guy was the only running back that had real juice to him. Rachaad White. Yes, him. He can make cuts which is sad if that’s the bar. He also fumbled during the team drills and somehow was the best of the group. Should tell you all you need to know for the RB group.

Jerome Ford is fine. We didn’t get to see enough of him during the broadcast. He did have a wide open touchdown run but didn’t have to work too hard to score.

Wide Receivers:

Not sure if this was by design, but we didn’t get to see a ton of WR vs DB drills. I would say Romeo Doubs stood out during the team session. Nothing flashy but got open.

Tight Ends:

Jake Ferguson looks awful. Slow can’t catch. Really limited athlete. I don’t see any real ceiling. What’s best case scenario? Special teams guy who serves as the third stringer? He’s going to run a bad 40 time. Got his ass kicked blocking in team drills.

Trey McBride made that nice catch by Pickett. I’ll be honest; I don’t see first round here. You’re smoking if you take the Colorado State product that high. Yes, he’s the Mackey Award winner but I thought Harrison Bryant was more interesting years ago.

I think the dude can play but he’s not the best in line blocker. He’s also not this massive target. He’s 6-foot-3 and looks like if Evan Engram was less athletic. Sure, you can take that guy in the first. I’m not sure it makes sense.

Wake me up when Jeremy Ruckert does something interesting. No? K. I’ll go back to sleep.

Offensive Line:

Daniel Faalele had a better day. He’s just so massive. He gets the hands on you it’s over. If he can anchor, it’s a win. Still needs work. Gets killed with speed. Jesse Luketa made him look like a little girl during the team drill in the play Pickett hits McBride.

This Trevor Penning is interesting. You can see the tools. He won a big rep against Tyreke Smith at Ohio State. Good length. It looks like he needs to get stronger. I want to see his bench number. If I had to guess, it will be underwhelming.

This Cole Strange out of UT Chat is interesting. Doesn’t he look like AQ Shipley? Not that strong with limited length. But crafty and seems functional in a phone booth. Not sure how good he is but seems like a long term development plan.

The Washington State guy blows. You can’t get pancaked by anyone that plays at Kansas. That’s what happened to Abraham Lucas. Automatically out.

Central Michigan’s Luke Goedeke looks small. If you told me he was a tight end, I’d believe you. Daniel Brunskill vibes. If you don’t know who that is, google it. Some scrub Daniel Jeremiah thought had talent and never made it.

Zion Johnson had an up and down day. He’s got a great ass on him. Looks good at guard. Played some center today and looked awkward. Thin base and sort of got pushed around. I’d say it’s not a huge concern but it’s obvious he’s better at guard.

Defensive Line:

Nobody won more today than Perrion Winfrey of Oklahoma. Good hell he’s a menace. Low center of gravity. Good first step. Little dancing bear cheese. Love the feet. High motor. Blows shit up. Keeps coming. Forced a fumble. He’s all over it.

The UConn guy stinks. Travis Jones. Okay, he might not stink but I’m out. He’s too upright. No knee bend. Too high. What’s sad is he actually had a good day according to most people. Can push the pocket and won in some team drills. I hate the knee bend and you can’t teach that. I’ll pass. He won’t make it big.

I do like Haskell Garrett at Ohio State. Limited high end athletic traits but powerful. Works the hand fighting. Pushes the pocket. Just don’t know if he’s got more than a bull and swim move?

This Myjai Sanders is having a week. Blowing plays up in the run game. Quick off the edge. Might be a little thin and could use to get stronger but this guy competes his ass off. Has a way to bring energy to the rest of the group.

Don’t get the buzz around this Arnold Ebiketie. His teammate at Penn State Luketa is just way better. Can do more things. Can play off the ball. Has a better array of pass rush moves. With Ebiketie, I get speed. That’s it. Limited moves. If he doesn’t win first move off the edge, he’s donezo.

Um… was someone going to warn me about this Logan Hall? Bruh… what kind of alien is this? 6-foot-6, 278 out there looking like a weird ass nose tackle that’s somehow too long for everyone. I’m not sure I’ve seen anything like it. Collapses the pocket and just has these long clubs that rip through linemen. He’s impressed big time.

Defensive Backs:

Not a ton of on screen stuff. However, it wasn’t hard to notice no quarterback went in Tariq Castro-Fields’ direction during the team drills.

Tell you what. This Jalen Pitre is scrappy. Just worried he might be too short. Seems better served as a weapon rather than pure safety.

I’d like to see Coby White be better with the ball in the air. Come down with some picks. He’s on guys. Just not always finishing the play.
