2022-23 Vendetta NBA Power Rankings: December

We are officially over a month into the 2022-23 NBA Season, so let’s do our December edition of the NBA Power Rankings! Check out our November preseason rankings here!

(Note: Tiebreakers go to team with better record! The second tiebreaker is better point differential!)

30. San Antonio Spurs (6-18)

The tank for Victor Wembanyama is going smoothly now. The Spurs have dropped 11 straight after starting the season 6-7. I say tank for Wemby, but getting him or Scoot Henderson would be a blessing. I would be lying though, if I wasn’t disappointed if the Spurs didn’t get Wemby. — Alex Chick III

29. Detroit Pistons (7-19)

  • Last Ranking: 29
  • Average: 27.9
  • (Matt 29, Michael 29, Anthony 27, Jack 29, Chickster 28, Trey 25, Patrick 28)

Shoutout to all the pundits who had Killian Hayes high on their draft boards but were uncertain about whether or not he would ever flourish roughly two-plus years into his career. It’s a small sample, the third-year guard has shown out since the injury to Cade Cunningham; Hayes is averaging 15.8 points, 7.4 assists and 1.8 steals on 50.0 percent shooting, including 40.9 percent from distance, over his last five games. I’m interested to see if he can still flash as a lead/secondary initiator when Cunningham returns, but the former No. 7 pick is right now and it’s an awesome sight to see.

28. Houston Rockets (7-17)

  • Last Ranking: 30
  • Average: 27.7
  • (Matt 28, Michael 28, Anthony 28, Jack 27, Chickster 27, Trey 29, Patrick 27)

The Rockets have looked *better* after their 2-12 start, but have still been one of the worst teams in the Association. They downed the Sixers Monday with James Harden and Joel Embiid, the Suns on the road with Devin Booker, the Hawks with Trae Young and Dejounte Murray who combined for 83 points and the Mavericks, who are the one exception in this case because they were without Luka Doncic. They’re now 4-3 over their last seven and 5-5 over their last 10. Houston’s still a mess defensively, and I can’t stop watching this play. But that’s neither here nor there.

27. Orlando Magic (5-20)

  • Last Ranking: 28
  • Average: 27.3
  • (Matt 27, Michael 30, Anthony 29, Jack 28, Chickster 29, Trey 19, Patrick 29)

Bol Bol looks like the NBA’s most improved player; Paolo Banchero might be the Rookie of the Year; Franz Wagner has taken a leap and Jalen Suggs is getting more reps under his name? And the Magic are still in the Wembanyama sweepstakes? Still seems like Ws all around to me!

26. Oklahoma City Thunder (11-13)

  • Last Ranking: 22
  • Average: 25.3
  • (Matt 25, Michael 25, Anthony 25, Jack 25, Chickster 24, Trey 27, Patrick 26)

You can’t say enough good things about Shai Gilgeous-Alexander this season, who’s putting together an All-NBA campaign, despite not having much help, before our very eyes. He’s averaging 31.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, 6.0 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.2 blocks on 61.9 percent true shooting this season. He hasn’t had a game where he’s scored fewer than 30 points since mid-November and has been the biggest reason, by far, on why the scrappy Thunder are just a few games from being .500. You can’t ask for a better start from SGA.

25. Charlotte Hornets (7-17)

  • Last Ranking: 26
  • Average: 24.9
  • (Matt 26, Michael 27, Anthony 26, Jack 19, Chickster 26, Trey 26, Patrick 24)

It’s been a tough go for the Hornets this season. LaMelo Ball has played just three games this season; Gordon Hayward fractured his shoulder and will miss an extended period of time; Dennis Smith Jr., who had an electrifying start to the season, has not played in two weeks (ankle) with no timetable for return; glue-guy Cody Martin had knee surgery in early Nov. and was expected to miss at least a month. The Hornets might as well be on #WembanyamaWatch, because it’s not realistic that their other pieces can bring them to a play-in bid with how they’re currently constructed.

24. Chicago Bulls (9-14)

  • Last Ranking: 13
  • Average: 22.9
  • (Matt 24, Michael 22, Anthony 23, Jack 23, Chickster 25, Trey 20, Patrick 23)

The Chicago Bulls, at this time in the season, have no identity and still no true point guard. It seems like Lonzo Ball is the glaring missing piece to the puzzle. But there’s no pending return in sight for Ball, and this team is out of the play-in race. The outlook could be a major trade at the deadline as it does nothing for them to be the 11th or 12th seed. If their pick lands anywhere outside the top-four, then they lose it.  Is trading a haul for Russell Westbrook so far-fetched? – Michael Ivanoskos

23. Los Angeles Lakers (10-13)

  • Last Ranking: 27
  • Average: 22.3
  • (Matt 20, Michael 24, Anthony 21, Jack 24, Chickster 21, Trey 28, Patrick 18)

Perhaps no player in the NBA is playing better than Anthony Davis is right now. Over his last nine games, he’s averaging 35.3 points, 15.6 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.2 steals and 2.9 blocks on 64.8 percent shooting from the floor, 45.5 percent from 3-point range (on 1.2 attempts) and 88.0 percent from the free-throw line. Those are monster numbers, and the Lakers are 7-2 in those games, having climbed up the bottom-half of the West. This level of play is likely unsustainable over a prolonged period of time, but if AD is consistently playing at an All-NBA level alongside a healthy LeBron James, the Lakers can absolutely squeak into a play-in spot in the West.

22. Minnesota Timberwolves (11-12)

  • Last Ranking: 16
  • Average: 21.9
  • (Matt 23, Michael 23, Anthony 22, Jack 20, Chickster 20, Trey 23, Patrick 22)

It’s been … an interesting start to the Wolves, to say the least. From Oct. 30 to Nov. 11, the Wolves had a seven-game stretch where they went 1-6. They followed that up with five straight wins over the Cavs, Magic, Sixers, Heat and Pacers, but have then lost four of five since to the Hornets, Warriors, Wizards and Thunder. The Russell-Edwards-Towns-Gobert foursome has yet to gel yet, which is a problem, but I’m holding form that it will piece itself together at some point this regular season. But it’s not looking good right now.

21. Washington Wizards (11-13)

  • Last Ranking: 23
  • Average: 21.7
  • (Matt 22, Michael 20, Anthony 20, Jack 21, Chickster 22, Trey 22, Patrick 25)

Similarly to last season, the Wizards’ hot start is washed away by a dismal stretch, bringing them back down to earth. Washington has now lost six of their last seven with their defense taking a massive hit, allowing north of 120 points per 100 possessions over that stretch. Bradley Beal injured his hamstring and is planning on being re-evaluated next week, which obviously isn’t good for Washington. Kyle Kuzma and Kristaps Porzingis have really blossomed through their first 24 games, but now more will be added to their play for the next few games, along with Monte Morris and Will Barton. The Wizards don’t have much shot creation, so let’s see if they can stay afloat and buckle up defensively over these next three games against Chicago, Indiana and the Clippers.

20. New York Knicks (11-13)

  • Last Ranking: 21
  • Average: 21.7
  • (Matt 21, Michael 21, Anthony 24, Jack 22, Chickster 23, Trey 21, Patrick 20)

The New York Knicks have been on a downhill trend since our last rankings, in large part due to being the worst three-point shooting time in the league. At 31.3% from distance as a team, they have about as much space as an airplane bathroom. The lone bright spot comes in the form of their rising star point guard, Jalen Brunson, who is averaging career highs in points (21), assists (6.3), and steals (1) per game.  The Knicks found their point guard, but their ceiling is no more than a play-in team. – Ivanoskos

19. Utah Jazz (14-12)

  • Last Ranking: 6
  • Average: 18.4
  • (Matt 14, Michael 13, Anthony 19, Jack 26, Chickster 16, Trey 24, Patrick 17)

The Jazz started the season a red hot 9-3 but have since crashed back down to earth — probably the way Danny Ainge originally intended. The biggest surprise of the early season may have been an aberration in reality. Lauri Markannen is finally living up to his once potential All-Star level ceiling averaging 22.2 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.2 assists on 52.8% shooting, 41.3% clip from distance and 83.3% from the stripe. A big part of any of the Jazz’s success has been their depth as their bench averages a League leading 43.5 points a game. This team may not remain a top team in the West, but barring injury or trades, they are formidable. — Ivanoskos

18. Portland Trail Blazers (13-11)

  • Last Ranking: 8
  • Average: 17.4
  • (Matt 16, Michael 18, Anthony 18, Jack 17, Chickster 19, Trey 18, Patrick 16)

The Trail Blazers underwent a two-and-a-half week stretch where they lost eight of 10, but got Damian Lillard back over the weekend after he missed seven straight due to an injury. They’ve now won two straight and will play their next three at home before playing 10 of 12 on the road. They’re still getting excellent production from Anfernee Simons — who had 45 points on Saturday — and forward Jerami Grant, who’s been one of their most consistent two-way players. This upcoming road trip is going to say a lot about them.

17. Dallas Mavericks (13-11)

  • Last Ranking: 5
  • Average: 15.4
  • (Matt 10, Michael 17, Anthony 17, Jack 18, Chickster 18, Trey 17, Patrick 11)

The Dallas Mavericks are the epitome of a Jekyll and Hyde team. They got their revenge against the Golden State Warriors, the team that took them down in the Western Conference Finals a season ago, but then they dropped a loss at the hands of the Detroit Pistons.

At the head of the snake is MVP candidate Luka Doncic, who leads the NBA in scoring at 33.4 points per game. He’s also fourth in the league in assists and third in steals, but his teammates haven’t played up to last season’s levels yet with Maxi Kleber shooting 35.2% from 3-point range, Dorian Finney-Smith is 32.8% and Reggie Bullock is shooting 35.2%. Spencer Dinwiddie has carried much of the load as a starter averaging 16 points after the departure of Jalen Brunson to the Knicks, while Christian Wood has been the sixth man with just under 17 points per game.

Luka can always go crazy in the playoffs, but if the Mavericks are going to at least return to the playoffs, other players are going to have to step up and Dallas needs to get better on the road, where the Mavericks are 2-8 this season. Dallas has work to do to avoid the play-in game as it sits 10th in the Western Conference at 12-11 after a blowout 121-100 win over the New York Knicks on Saturday. — Patrick Hayslip

16. Brooklyn Nets (13-12)

  • Last Ranking: 20
  • Average: 14.9
  • (Matt 19, Michael 15, Anthony 11, Jack 15, Chickster 10, Trey 15, Patrick 19)

The Brooklyn Nets are finally playing better as a squad, rattling off a four-game win streak to end the month of November and the start of December. They are 13-12 which is good enough for the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference. Guard Seth Curry, small forward Joe Harris and small forward T.J. Warren are all healthy again and finding their footing in the rotation. Point guard Ben Simmons has started to play better and is beginning to show why he was once an All-Star.

The month of November needs to be put in the rearview as controversy surrounded Kyrie Irving and the Nets for most of the month. Irving has served his suspension and the team will look to push forward. Thankfully, once again, they have the all-time great Kevin Durant, who is having another MVP-caliber season. Durant is averaging 29.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 5.4 assists but he simply needs more help from his team if the Nets want to be a top-four seed in the East. — Anthony Miranda

15. Miami Heat (11-14)

  • Last Ranking: 17
  • Average: 14.4
  • (Matt 18, Michael 16, Anthony 15, Jack 11, Chickster 17, Trey 14, Patrick 10)

One step forward, two steps back. That has been the epitome of the 2022-23 Miami Heat season so far. If you’re looking for a bright spot: Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo have clearly taken respective leaps; Kyle Lowry might be playing his best basktball since leaving Toronto and Caleb Martin — who replaced PJ Tucker as the team’s starting 4 — but Miami’s shooting has regressed, which has cratered their offense to No. 26. It lacks consistent offensive identity; its defense is just outside the top-10, despite playing zone a fair amount of time, but that’s not going to cut it for a team with championship aspirations. Changes are going be needed somwhere — quickly — if they even want to sniff a title this season.

14. Los Angeles Clippers (14-11)

  • Last Ranking: 14
  • Average: 14.3
  • (Matt 15, Michael 19, Anthony 13, Jack 13, Chickster 15, Trey 13, Patrick 12)

The LA Clippers recently received some of the worst news that any franchise could get losing their top two superstars to the injury bug early on in the season. John Wall has been a pleasant surprise averaging over 12 points and five dimes per contest on 44% shooting off the bench. This and Ivica Zubac‘s 31-point and 29-rebound extravaganza of a game remain the lone highlights of late. The Clippers do sit in the play-in tournament, but it is not a firm spot considering their suspect fortune. This team, when healthy, has title aspirations, but we’ve been singing the same song and dance for years. — Ivanoskos

13. Toronto Raptors (12-12)

  • Last Ranking: 11
  • Average: 14.0
  • (Matt 17, Michael 12, Anthony 16, Jack 14, Chickster 14, Trey 10, Patrick 15)

The Toronto Raptors have stayed above water in a competitively tight Eastern Conference. They are getting healthy at the right time with the returns of Pascal Siakam, Scottie Barnes and Fred VanVleet bolstering their lineup. The biggest story remains OG Anunoby’s breakout campaign as a two-way star who is putting up nearly 18 points a night and leading the league in steals at nearly three a game. Placing himself in MIP and DPOY conversations. Meanwhile, Pascal Siakam is back to All-NBA form as the human beyblade averages 24.5 points, 8.9 rebounds and 7.1 assists on 49% shooting from the floor. The Raptors should continue to rise and cement themselves as playoff contenders. — Ivanoskos

12. Indiana Pacers (13-11)

  • Last Ranking: 24
  • Average: 13.9
  • (Matt 13, Michael 10, Anthony 12, Jack 12, Chickster 13, Trey 16, Patrick 21)

The Pacers continue to overachieve this season although they have cooled off as of late. They are 2-4 in their last six before their matchup with the Trail Blazers. Indiana sits at the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference in part due to the terrific play from guard Tyrese Haliburton. Haliburton is averaging 19.1 points, 10.9 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game. Center Myles Turner has turned it up in November, averaging 16.6 points, 7.7 rebounds and an incredible 2.3 blocks on the season. Shooting guard Buddy Hield continues to be one of the go-to scorers with his fantastic three-point shooting ability. Finally, rookie Bennedict Mathurin is a problem. He has the opportunity to win Rookie of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year which has never happened before in NBA history. — Miranda

11. Golden State Warriors (13-12)

  • Last Ranking: 18
  • Average: 10.9
  • (Matt 12, Michael 14, Anthony 14, Jack 16, Chickster 8, Trey 7, Patrick 5)

The Warriors are still struggling in the first half of the 2022 NBA season, but they have fought back, currently sitting as the Western Conference. They are 5-1 in their last six games as they try to show that they can make another deep playoff run. Point guard Steph Curry is playing at an MVP level averaging 30.0 points, 7.0 assists, and 6.6 rebounds while shooting an astonishing 43.2 percent from behind the arc. Small forward Andrew Wiggins has been great thus far, especially coming off a 36-point performance against the Houston Rockets. Shooting guard Jordan Poole has been solid averaging 17.0 points and 4.5 assists but he will need to be more consistent if the Warriors want to be a top-five seed. Golden State has an offense that can score with the best of the NBA, but they will need better play from their bench if they hope to be considered a top team in the league this year. — Miranda

10. Atlanta Hawks (13-10)

  • Last Ranking: 10
  • Average: 10.6
  • (Matt 11, Michael 7, Anthony 10, Jack 9, Chickster 12, Trey 11, Patrick 14)

The Hawks, who place in the bottom-third in offense leaguewide, have taken a step back from their 7-3 start. SGA picked them part en-route to a 121-114 win over the Hawks Monday, dropping them to 13-10. Trae Young has been reportedly getting in feuds with head coach Nate McMillan and John Collins is still being lumped into trade rumors. But on a more positive note, AJ Griffin has looked like one of the best rookies in the league, and Dejounte Murray has still looked like a good fit next to Young. Plus, Bogdan Bogdanovic is back as another possible creator!

9. Sacramento Kings (13-9)

  • Last Ranking: 25
  • Average: 9.7
  • (Matt 8, Michael 11, Anthony 9, Jack 10, Chickster 9, Trey 8, Patrick 13)

Light The Beam, Light The Beam, Light The Beam! This chant, which has been ringing through Sacramento, is beginning to be heard throughout the NBA. The Kings went on a three-game skid in late November as they lost to the Celtics, Suns, and Hawks respectively, but they bounced back and won their next three games. Sacramento appears to have a complete team with two all-star caliber players in point guard De’Aaron Fox, and center Domantas Sabonis as well as a solid starting five. Finally, they have a good bench this year with power forward Chimezie Metu finding success as a small ball five. Shooting guard Malik Monk is putting his name in the Sixth Man of the Year race averaging 14.7 points, 4.3 assists, and 2.1 rebounds on 36.8 3PT shooting off of the bench. Sacramento is 13-9, which is good enough for the fifth seed in the Western Conference, and the drought might be over this year as the Kings look the part of a playoff team. — Miranda

8. Philadelphia 76ers (12-12)

  • Last Ranking: 15
  • Average: 9.4
  • (Matt 9, Michael 9, Anthony 8, Jack 8, Chickster 11, Trey 12, Patrick 9)

The biggest question mark this Sixers team had going into this season was if they had addressed the lack of depth that has cost this team championships in years’ past. Recently, the depth of this team has been put to the ultimate test with James Harden and Tyrese Maxey both missing significant time. Joel Embiid also missed time with an ankle injury but despite these key losses, guys have stepped up. Shake Milton has averaged 23.6 points in the absence of Maxey, Melton also stepped up with back-to-back games of 20 or more points. Paul Reed has also been huge down in the paint, averaging 13.3 rebounds, 2 steals and 2.5 blocks per 48 minutes during Embiid’s absence. Injuries have done this team no favor, but the improved play of role players like Milton and Reed have given this team something to be excited about. — Sabin

7. New Orleans Pelicans (15-8)

  • Last Ranking: 12
  • Average: 6.6
  • (Matt 4, Michael 8, Anthony 6, Jack 7, Chickster 5, Trey 9, Patrick 7)

Don’t look now, but the Pelicans have climbed up to the No. 2-seed in the Western Conference! Jose Alvarado erupted for 38 points on Sunday against the Nuggets, giving New Orleans their 10th win in their last 13 games. Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram have played like All-Stars, Trey Murphy has blossomed as an athletic 3-and-D wing and Herbert Jones is still the defensive menace he is. Oh, and have I mentioned that New Orleans is 3rd in defense? Yeah, that’s a thing — a pretty good thing too, I’ll say!

6. Memphis Grizzlies (15-9)

  • Last Ranking: 7
  • Average: 6.1
  • (Matt 6, Michael 5, Anthony 7, Jack 6, Chickster 7, Trey 6, Patrick 6)

The Grizzlies, down four starters, beat the Heat on Monday and are still a top-4 team in the West. Jaren Jackson Jr. is having the best scoring season of his career — averaging 19.4 points — in-part because of Desmond Bane’s injury, but he’s also posting career bests in rebounds and blocks through an eight-game sample. Tyus Jones, Santi Aldama and John Konchar continue to give them steady production while Ja Morant is lighting the league on fire. They’ve cleaned up the defense since the dreadful start, so my stock on the Grizzlies is higher than it was to initially start the year.

5. Denver Nuggets (14-10)

  • Last Ranking: 9
  • Average: 5.4
  • (Matt 7, Michael 4, Anthony 5, Jack 5, Chickster 4, Trey 5, Patrick 8)

I honestly feel like I could just copy my description from the last power ranking and plop it right here –almost nothing has changed with this Nuggets team in terms of their problems. They are very good when Nikola Jokic is on the floor, but very bad when he’s not. Denver is currently 29.0 points per 100 possessions better with him on the court than when he’s not playing. This number has doubled from last year and highlights the clear lack of depth within this team. However, when the likes of Jokic, Jamal Murray and Kevin Porter Jr. are playing, this team is very, very good and show why they can be real contenders. But until they address the clear lack of depth down this roster, I just don’t see that happening. — Sabin

4. Cleveland Cavaliers (16-9)

  • Last Ranking: 2
  • Average: 4.6
  • (Matt 5, Michael 6, Anthony 4, Jack 4, Chickster 6, Trey 3, Patrick 4)

The Cavs have taken a slight step back from their roaring start, but have still been a top-5 team in the league for the first two months of the season. Their offense has taken a slight step back, but have still won seven of their last 10 games, with half of those games without stalwart center Jarrett Allen. They’re still 10th in offense and second in the league in defense. And if they can stay healthy and consistently hold their water against the top of the East, they have as good of a chance as anyone to lock in a top-4 seed.

3. Phoenix Suns (16-8)

  • Last Ranking: 3
  • Average: 3.1
  • (Matt 3, Michael 3, Anthony 3, Jack 3, Chickster 3, Trey 4, Patrick 3)

Death. Taxes. The Suns out-performing (regular season) expectations. Phoenix did, however, get gashed by 19 on the road against the Mavericks — they haven’t beaten those allegations yet, huh? — on Monday in the second night of a back-to-back, but the Suns are still 9-5 since Chris Paul’s injury with victories over the Bulls, red-hot Kings, Lakers and Warriors. That’s not nothing. Phoenix will have Boston, the Pelicans twice and the Clippers over the next 10 days. But Phoenix has looked like one of the top teams in the NBA and it doesn’t look like they’re slowing down anytime soon.

2. Milwaukee Bucks (17-6)

  • Last Ranking: 1
  • Average: 1.7
  • (Matt 2, Michael 2, Anthony 2, Jack 2, Chickster 1, Trey 2, Patrick 1)

The Bucks finally have Khris Middleton healthy; Giannis Antetokounmpo is the unquestioned best all-around player in the association. Fatigue voting is what may keep him from adding a third MVP to his collection, but his second DPOY may well be within his bounds. Meanwhile, Splash Mountain, Brook Lopez is turning back the clock, pacing the league in rejections at three blocks which is a career high.  Other than the Boston Celtics, they will not have much competition for winning the Eastern Conference at this rate. — Ivanoskos

1. Boston Celtics (20-5)

  • Last Ranking: 4
  • Average: 1.3
  • (Matt 1, Michael 1, Anthony 1, Jack 1, Chickster 2, Trey 1, Patrick 2)

Well, the Celtics’ position on this list shouldn’t really be a surprise to anybody/ They have clearly been the best team in the NBA and their league-leading 20-5 record illustrates that. They have been an absolute offensive juggernaut led by the play of Jayson Tatum, who has frankly been playing at an MVP-type level. Jaylen Brown has also been playing at an elite level adding 26.7 points on 50.4 shooting from the field to pair with great defense.

But apart from those two has been the play of guys like Malcolm Brogdon who’s averaging 13.9 points while shooting 49.4 from 3. Derrick White has also been a great 3-and-D wing as he currently sits at 43.4 percent from 3. This Celtics team can score a lot of different ways, which was proven in their win against the Wizards in which they scored 130 points without Tatum. So long as both Tatum and Brown are playing at an elite level, this Celtics team has the chance to make another serious run. — Sabin
