2021 NFL Week Thirteen is in the books. In a weekend that was dominated by college football championship games, the Detriot Lions have finally won a football game. 2021 NFL Week Thirteen- The Lions Got A Win
They finally did it, the Detroit Lions have won a football game in 2021. It took a 75-yard game-winning drive as time expired and some questionable goal-line defense from the Vikings to complete the miracle but it happened. I wrote an article before the season started explaining why everyone should be rooting for the Lions and this game only further supported that article. If you weren’t a Lions fan on Sunday then you have no soul.
Even though the Lions currently hold the worst record in the NFL and have the number one draft pick, I think there is hope for this team. If Jared Goff gets protection and has weapons to throw to, he can be a competent quarterback in this league. They have shown they can draft offensive pieces well with guys like DeAndre Swift, TJ Hockenson, and Penei Sewell. The Lions just need some defensive pieces and one more explosive weapon on offense to start winning some of these games.
As for the Vikings, this game may have just ended the Cousins/ Zimmer era in Minnesota.
2021 NFL Week Thirteen- Pats Win A Bizarre MNF Game
In a game where Mac Jones completed two passes for 19 yards, the Patriots went into Buffalo and ran all over the Bills’ defense. Damien Harris, Rhamondre Stevenson, and even Brandon Bolden took turns bludgeoning the Bills’ defense as Harris opened the scoring with a 64-yard touchdown which set the tone for the rest of the game.
Although it was a great win for the Patriots, this loss is going to sting for Josh Allen and the Bills. After sweeping the division in 2020 Bills fans were positive the AFC East was theirs for years to come, only to lose to a team where the quarterback threw three passes. I’m no defensive coordinator but the Patriots weren’t even trying to pass the ball so why there were not eight guys in the box every play for the Bills was a little puzzling. Nevertheless, the Patriots moved to 9-4 and sit atop of the AFC with a rematch with Buffalo looming on the horizon.
2021 NFL Week Thirteen- Miami Controls Their Own Destiny
Who would have thought the Miami Dolphins would have an outside chance of the playoffs after starting 1-7? After a rough start to the 2021 season, the Dolphins have rattled off six wins in a row and look like a complete team. Tua is playing the best ball we have seen him play, he is incredibly accurate and is making the throws he needs to make. Jaylen Waddle has started to come on and has given the offense a speed element they did not have last year.
The story is the defense however, they are forcing turnovers and getting after the quarterback which is a recipe for success. Jevon Holland and Jaelen Phillips have infused some youth into this defense and have made a real contribution. The Dolphins play the Jets next week and could be above .500 for the first time since week two.
2021 NFL Week Thirteen- Minshew Mania
The NFL is just better when Gardner Minshew is playing. On Sunday he got that opportunity to play as Jalen Hurts was unable to go with an injury. Minshew and the Eagles came out swinging scoring on their first six possessions. Minshew finished the day going 20-25 for 242 yards and two touchdowns. It was a cool moment to see a guy that was basically discarded by the Jags but an even cooler moment was the post-game embrace he had with his dad. The guy just loves football.
The Eagles have some options when it comes to the quarterback position. They have a solid starter in Jalen Hurts, a capable backup in Gardner Minshew, and a plethora of draft picks. They could either ride it out with the guys they have or go try and make a splash in free agency. The Eagles’ future has some promise.
2021 NFL Week Thirteen- 49ers Suffer A Terrible Loss
The Seattle Seahawks held a 3-8 record heading into week thirteen. The 49ers were 6-6 and coming off a big win versus the Minnesota Vikings. So, what do the 49ers do in a game they should win by two touchdowns; they pissed down their leg and lose to a bad Seattle team. The 49ers had a sizable lead and the ball in the second half only to give the game away to Seattle. The worst part was the Seahawks tried to let you win the game with several red-zone turnovers and they couldn’t capitalize on it.
The 49ers and Kyle Shanahan have basically forgotten about Trey Lance at this point. In their eyes, Jimmy G gives them the best chance of winning and has no intentions to play the young quarterback. That plan works if your team makes the playoffs, if the 49ers don’t make the playoffs and Trey Lance doesn’t play in a couple of games, then the season is going to feel like a waste. In the NFC, nine wins might get you in the playoffs. For a team like San Francisco, a loss like this is crippling to their playoff chances.
