The NBA community can’t wait to watch Zion Williamson dominant in the NBA. Before the year started, a lot of draft experts thought Zion Williamson was just a dunker. Obviously, he showed that he’s much, much more. The thing that Zion is known for is his dunking. As far as getting to see Zion in a dunk contest in the future… forget about it. Zion says it’s not happening.
“I don’t think I’m going to do [the dunk contest] to be
honest, unless something changes my mind,” Williamson said. “I’m not much of a dunk contest person, it’s kind of like I just do it in warmups to get myself going… We already got some great dunkers, they won’t be missingnothing with me.”
Let’s be honest. The dunk contest sucks. I’m done with it altogether. I don’t blame Zion for not wanting in. The dunk contest is a joke. I remember last year when Dennis Smith Jr. missed three dunks in a row and still got 9’s across the board. It’s a joke. The year before we had Donovan Mitchell rocking a Raptors jersey while playing for the Jazz. I would have vomited if I were a Jazz fan and protested until the guy was traded. It’s a circus except a lot worse.
There’s only one way to save the dunk contest. All the top players need to enter. No more schmucks like Hamidou Diallo as the headliner. We also need judges that have a set of balls and are willing to hand out zeros. Until we start seeing top dogs all gather together and opt into the contest, it’s going to be the same sour grape it’s been in recent memory.
The most entertaining dunks you will see next year from Zion are lobs from Lonzo Ball. That is if Ball actually proves that he’s worth more than a bag of chips. Thus far, he has not.
