Zack Wheeler: “He’s one of the best pitchers in baseball”
“He’s one of the best pitchers in baseball”. Those are the words of Dave Dombrowski after Zack Wheeler signed a contract extension to stay in Philadelphia.
He’s right, by the way. I just think it’s a good time to reflect. You know, reflect on something that I’ll never get proper credit for. Wheeler, 33, was entering the final year of a five-year, $118 million deal. A contract that turned into a total bargain. A contract that I convinced the organization to pursue. When I worked for the Phillies back then, I told anyone who would listen to go pursue Wheeler. It turned into the greatest free agent signing in franchise history.
I have proof, by the way. The site existed when I was a lower-level employee. It’s right there in the embed for your viewing pleasure.
It’s something I’ll never get credit for but that’s okay. I did my job to the best of my ability and in the end, made a fan base incredibly happy. That’s the name of the game. If another team was smart, they would give me a call but that’s outside of my control. Dombrowski should just know that he’s probably not on the team without me.
In the end, it’s not super surprising the Phillies got an extension done here. It was something that was hinted at earlier in the offseason. The extension is 100% deserved and I couldn’t be happier for the player.
Don’t worry, Steve Cohen still won’t call me. He knows everything.
