Yu Darvish Agrees to 6-year, $108 Million Extension With Padres

The San Diego Padres and Yu Darvish agree to a 6-year, $108 million contract extension. The extension will keep Darvish in SoCal until his age-42 season.

Yu Darvish is coming off one of the best season Major League seasons in his career. He was on his way to a contract year this season, but the Padres didn’t let him get there.

Darvish is a workhorse for San Diego. Over 190 IP in 30 starts. Yu is a pretty good bet to start every five days for San Diego.

In possibly Darvish’s most important start of the season at the time, he absolutely locked down the New York Mets. That night, he made easy work of outdueling Max Scherzer.

This might be somewhat of a surprising move. Not necessarily that Darvish will remain a Padre, but that San Diego is willing to give an aging pitcher a six-year deal.

“It’s something of a gamble, paying that sum to a 36-year-old vet. But the Padres are convinced Darvish is the guy to gamble on. They feel he’s still getting better, still developing, still curious. Had one year left on his deal prior to this, and didn’t want to leave SD.” said Padres reporter AJ Cassavell on Twitter.

Darvish is the type to age well though. He doesn’t rely on velocity but rather on finesse, movement, and spin rate.

This marks the third six-year contract that Darvish has agreed to in his career. The first two were with the Rangers and Cubs.

The Padres acquired Darvish after the awful 2020 MLB season.

Remember when Yu Darvish was a Dodger? His most memorable performance there was when he got thumped by the cheating Astros in Game 7 of the 2017 World Series. Now he’ll remain one of the Dodgers’ biggest rivals.

I’m excited to see old man Darvish dealing with the Padres for years to come.
